Making my own robo armour out of cardboard!

-----------------------------------

Hi there

I, just liek every other robo fan want the ultimate robo item, the armour, but just like a lot of peaople, dont have a spare few thou to spend on it.

but, i do have time and a creative side :)

so ive decided to make my own armour out of cardboard, then spray paint it.

my plan is to make tyhe whole thing out of cardboard, which i can easily get from work, and stick it all together using a glue gun (im too impatient to wait for glue to dry and would rather burn my self and get it done quick, robo wouldnt mind the pain so neither do i!) then when its all made, fill in any gapes between sheets of card using the gluegun as a filler (this works surprisingly well) then spray it with silver car paint, adding highlights of blue purple just like on my 18inch necca that im using as a referance.

im gonna make the suit in parts and jhave them all stick together with velcro, ive strated with the helmet. so far ive done the helmet and chin guard, but need to fill in the gaps with glue. i will post up some pics tomorrow just before i paint the helmet.

so far it has taken about 6 hours to make the helmet/chinguard, which isnt bad me thinks :)

im not going for a super detailed, 100% screen accurate suit, just one that loosk pretty decent, can be worn, and then can be put on a manequin and posed to look double hard!

any tips, tricks advice on making a robo suit, then please do share!

I'd love to see pics of your wok in progress. Especially since I think a cardboard Robo-suit will look like a bag of shit..

I'm not trying to be an ass, I'm just being honest. I just hope you'll prove me wrong and post a pic of robo-cardboard-badassness.

Good luck, Brother!

The biggest problem really is if you will have the time and can commit to such a big project.
A robo cardboard suit HAS been done before so it's not impossible, but it will take A LOT of time.

Check this link out. It leads to a page where a guy shows step by step how he made his suit:

Actually, those pics have gone beyond my expectations as to how a Cardboard Robo-suit can be made...I suppose I lack the imagination to bring something like that to life. Though a bit campy, Robo might actually look a bit cool rendered in cardboard.

Except for the helmet (which is not bad), the entire suit looks pretty good. I'm impressed that it was made from cardboard and epoxy. 4 years? Now THAT's determination!

One of my Summer projects was to make a life sized cardboard Endoskeleton (except I would use the 1:1 scale vinyl head) but I have no time as I found out so I'll put it off until next year.

-----------------------------------

ok, so the helmet is now done, all gaps filled and it has just this minute received its first coat of primer, i will let that dry then fill in any gaps missed.

getting spray paint 2morro and more glue sticks :)

i looked at them links, the robosuit is awesome, but i dont think i will use plaster coz platser cracks cardboard on its own dont, i may not get the same quality finish, but it will be a lot more durable, which is essential if it is to be worn.

i wud take pics of the hemlet as it is now, but it is soaking wet in its little cardboard house i made to priotect the rest of the room from being turned grey.

from about 2 feet away it looks well good, but close up it loosk a bit... dunno sh1t i guess O_o meh, like i said in my first post, it dont have to be as good as an actual robo suit, just good enough to look cool when worn or wen on a manaquin.

i will put up pics of primered helmet wen its touch dry in an hour or so, altho i did kinda give it a heavy coat, so who knows...

ok so the primer is dry, there are some minor imperfections, but nothing i cant fix :P need more glue before i can finish off the chin guard, ive kept it in the pics tho so you can see what it all looks liek before it gets primered.

Close up of some of the detailed parts, let me be the first to say that up this close, they look crap and wont get much neater using cardboard and hot glue, i dont really wanna faff aroud with other materials, i will just have to see how it turns out after i paint it.

your thoughts on my progress so far?

Getting paint tomorro, would go now but halfords dont open til 9ish :(

One thing im stuck on, the visor, should it be 100% crystal clear, or tinted black? if its clear then im gonna use an old soda bottle, if it needs to be tinted then i dunno... suggestions?

also, i tried using the image tabs [img] [/img] but couldnt get em to work... O_o

That thing is beastly, built damn well. And I'm sure it'll look even better after some paint thrown on.

As for the visor, I'd tint it black. That way your eyes will stand out less.

thanks, it does look quite menacing i recon :)

anywho, i got my paint all halfords brands, got grey primer, clear laquer, ford moondust silver, ford purple velvet and nissan light blue. all of the paintsd are metallic and ive put their names down heer incase i finish a can and accidently throw it out then going to halfords to buy more and not knowing which one i used! :P

i also got some "isopon p40 bridges holes and rust" it says its a glass fibre compound, u mix it witha hardener and it goes hard (well duh) iv applied some to a scrap piece of cardboard, shud be set soon, i may use it, i may not, its quite expensive, but only takes 15-30 mins to set so its right down my alley (i am pretty impatient :P)

i have also been playing around with the paints on anotehr scrap piece of cardboard, did a base coat of silver, then added some bits of blue and purple just liek they did on the 18inch necca, wen it drys i will laquere it and post a pic to see what you think of the color scheme.

thats all for now, im gonna go open some windows, all these paint/fibreglass fumes are gonna make me high otherwise O_o

-----------------------------------

hello again, 15-30 minutes indeed...

stuff still aint completely dry, maybe i didnt use enough hardener, its dry ish and it looks and feels pretty good, so good infact that id be happy using this stuff for the shole suit, but, my budget wont let me do this.

just gave my helmet a quick spray of silver. looks... erm... not quite as good as id like... the color is spot one, but im not too keen on the texture, its just the top opf the head where ive had to kind jigsaw picece it all together i dont like the rest i can live with, maybe after a few coats and some laquere it will look ok.

if not, i dunno what i will do, maybe smooth it off sith paper mache? (but it take soooooooooo long to frickin dry!!!) or strips of tape (tape is smooth right, wudnt want it to peel off tho)

while the silver is drying i will conduct some tests using tape.

also, laquere almost dry on test sheet to show u color scheme :)

ok so i did a few "tests" electrical tape seems to work quite well, so i coated the helet in it :) black robo looks kinda cool, almospt liek robocable, but less gay :P

anyways, i also coated the chingard in tape, using black electrical tape, and after doing the chin guard have decided that any black parts (chin guard, ab region, gloves etc) will be coated in tape and then thats it, the tape is shiney enough and smoot so why paint it black?

my helmet has been taped and primered again, gonna do 2 coats iof primer, then paint it, so shud have a finished painte robo helmet tonight :)

that is if it dried quick enogh, supposed to lave like 30 mins between coats

any ideas on how to do th writing? im thinking stencil, or marker pen.

ok first the good :)

-color is just how i wanted it to turn out
-nice and smooth feel to it
-shiney
-rock solid

and now the bad :(
-i think i need to make the chin a tad smaller
-not quite a smooth looking as id liked, but good enough
-still cant figure out how to do the writing
-need to fill the gaps between the chin guard and my face, probs use foam
-i look like a nob in it!

and thats it, pretty easy to make that was :) the rest of the body shouldnt be hard, will start on the torso asap

My pleasure my friend,
I am happy of being able to help you,
there are two kind of mid section,
there are mid hard section and mid flexible section.

the hard mid section this composes of the front chest and the back as well as the front of posterior and the back of the posterior one.

for the mid flexible section,
it is in one alone part with a closing zipp with the back.

I can you send the pictures if you wish it by email ;)

Sorry for my poorly english my friend.

only problem with the body is i dont know if it will fit! i cant get into it, i will wait until i have finished it, then cut it in half, then use velcro to hold the front anf back halves together. having two halves will alos make painting a lot easier :D

as for the mid section i guess i will have to experiment as cardboard is only so flexible. i thought it would have some flex in it but didnt know for sure, i now know, thank you!

stay tuned for updates!

the next thing to do is make the back section and then paint it!

wearing it and looking at how it looks in the mirror makes me wanna do more! looks a lot better than i thought it would seeing as its cardboard and electrical tape! alas, its like 6am now and i should really get some sleep!

thank you nika. u havent missed much, this thread is only a couple of weeks old!

i have now finished painting the chest, added blue and purple highlights and have to say its looking pretty good! waiting for the paint to dry which shouldnt take long, its 22C outside right now and its 1am!!! 2 coats of laquer as i did the helmet then i can strat painting the back, dont know wether i have enough primer left tho... wont be able to get more until friday now (payday :P)

i guess i could get started on the flexible abdominal section and the pelvic region. gonna save the limbs for last as they have moving parts and need to be stuck onto the body somehow but still be able to move freely. also the gloves are gonna be tricky to make out of cardboard.

i will post a pic of the chest later on as i dont think it will take long to dry in this heat :D

The back is now sprayed, and i have just this minute applied the 2nd and final coat of laquer to it, so the back is now done, will post a pic in a few hours once it is dry enough

i have also strted on the pelvic area, just need to build it up a bit and cover it in tape.

the felxible mid section is done, but in pieces, cant put it together until the pelvic bit is done as i think it will be best to join the two to make putting the suit on easier.

i had to modify the design ever so slightly, robo has 2 "rings" between his upper abdiminal area, and his pelvis. i have had to add a 3rd "ring". either i measured something slightly off, or i have disproportioned body :P

when i am finished i will mount it on a manequin and admire it :) and as i have a video camera i would not be a worth robo fan if i didnt make some sort of short film :D

ive made a very rough arm, both upper and lower, with a hinge and it works, impossible to put the arms on once u are wearing the body as the chest is so big u cant reach across to your other arm! but with a little help from my fiancé i got the arm on and it works fine, very limited range of motion, but im guessing the real suit wasnt very practicle to move around in.

the arm i made is very rough, so much so that it is all held together with very little electrical tape. that way i canb just undo it all, draw around each piece and have the parts exactly the same size for the other arm, me clever see :)

will hopefully have a decent looking arm to post either 2morro or day after

keep them comments coming, they are what is driving me on!

quick edit, i know have an avitar :)

quick update, started on the hands, thought it would be best to do them before i finalize the arms as the hands have to be an exact fit otherwise i wont be able to pick things up or hold an auto9 :P

should have a hand done later on tonight, fingers are easier than i though, but a bit tedious as i have to do 10 of em :(

how did i get into this hobby? dunno really, i always used to make things out of cardboard as a kid, never really stopped. of course now that i am older i can get things like paint, velcro hot glue etc etc so its a bit easier. i just lov makign things, i also made this:

took 2 years, so the couple of months i recon this suit will take is nothing in comparison as far as time and budget are envolved.

3 hours and i have done the right hand :) mad it was fiddly, tedious and just a damn bastard, im well looking forward to making the other hand O_o

anyways, here it is:

http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/8571/picture012dc5.th.jpghttp://img133.imageshack.us/img133/4747/picture016nz4.th.jpg

pretty flexible (i can open and close hand, pick up a gun and open doors etc) but it is very solid, most of it is thick cardboard, with the flexible bits doent he same was as the midsection, paper with electrical tape stuck over it.

wrist/lower forearm is in the same kind fo state as the upper arm, very rough. i plan on completing the wrist 2morro. will then make a proper start on the right arm.

hello again. been working on lower arm, have it pretty much sorted, but am not gonna glue it together yet as i wanna keep it all flat so i can copy it for the other arm as i think this will make it easier and save time. and besides the mrs is having a ladies night shindig 2morro and i dont think she wud be too happy if i stink the house up with spray paint :P

was looking at the body and helmet a second ago and i feel that since i made these my technique in making the parts has improved and i can make those parts better, so i may modify the helmet and chest once im done, depends how it all looks :)

also a quick question for anyone that may know, do you recon there wud be any way to cast my parts? keeping in mind that they are made of cardboard, coated in electrical tape, primered, painted and laquered....

Excellent work man. I made a cardboard robosuit a few years back and probably like you alot of people said it could not be done with good detail. It really is looking amazing. I think i will be making a new one for halloween but this time in foam with a cartoon feel to the build. Good luck with the rest of your build and i look forward to seeing it finished...

lol, well im glad u all liek what ive done so far and cant wait to get it finished and start on a terminator endo :)

but for now im still making the friggin arm. been platying around with it trying to sort out where to put foam to make it fit best and wether or not to permanently attach iot tot eh lower arm or not. i have decided it will be easier to put on if i do attach the two peices.

the upper arm is so close to beiong done now. all that is left is to add the 3 spikey thingies, and to complete the hole on the top of the arm then its time to paint. so pics shud be about this time 2morro!

ther upper arm is done and has been primered. here it is:

wearing the whole arm with the rest of the sui seriously restricts your movement, but it does look and feel soooo cool to wear!

give the primer 30 mins to dry, then another coat, then silver, then blue and purple, then 2 coats fo laquer, so about 4 hours until i reattch both pieces and the arm is pretty much done :)

the arm is now done (minus the black bits between the parts) in the pic there is no joint between the two so they are slightly out of line. here is the arm:

will start work on the left arm next, again starting at the hand and working my way up. i have made templates for the whole arm when i made this one so it should be quite straight forward :)

anyways, comment away!

Oh man that thing looks fucking amazing. One thing I thought might happen when you started was that it was going to look thin and sort of hang about loosely. Comparing it to your arm that's definitely not what's going on. It looks very bulky, but exactly like Robocop was. The detail is great, and that fact that you can move at all in it amazes me. Even if it was just a non-movable display piece it'd look great, but what you're doing here is really outstanding.

Yes! Even a basic guide would help tremendously. I'm also in the process of making my own Robo armor out of Wonderflex and hotglue. (I'll post pics as soon as I have 'em.) Without a guide, it's basically a shot in the dark when it comes to actual construction. Reference pics only help so much...the rest is pure guesswork!

if this helps, I made my helmet out of paper mache. basically I took a balloon and blew it up to the shape of the helmet as best as I could, then layered mache over it.. really thick then..
after popping the balloon, I shellacked the inside of the mache and add more mache inside, when that dried it had a smoother outter surface,

at leas that way you are still sticking to cardboard and paper materials

-----------------------------------

hi robo3. the way i do each part is buy using a layering process. basically the first layer is the main shape of the part, then on top of that will be the same parts (just draw around the original parts and cut them out again) but with bits cut out of them for the detailing.

i cover the parts in tape BEFORE i put them onto the first layer, it makes the lines more crisp and the tape cant come unstuck. Tha raised bits are easy, just done the same way, make the part out of cardboard, cover in tape, then glue it on. easy peasy

As for the helmet, i took a rectangle piece, cut out visor then bent it round to amek the bottom part where the eyes are. then to give it that rounded shape it took a while. basically i got a long thing (about 1cm) strip of cardboard and stuck it on the back, then round to the front to give me a basic outline of how big the dome should be, then i did the same thing with a horizontal piece going from ear to ear. then came the hard part. i cut out tiny squares about 3cmx3cm and basically "tiled" the round shape in, trimming some pieces if needed. u can see the tiled look here:

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/7535/picture020mj3.th.jpg

then i covered it all in electrical tape to make it a bit smoother, then primed painted and laquered it using car paint.

hope this helps, if any of it is unclear then say and i will try to explain better.

Here's what I've been building: http://www.freewebs.com/build_warhammer/projectrobocopeng.htm

So i was having a tidy up the other day moved some boxes and what did i see, pieces of a half finished robo... it was a sorry site, kinda like in robo 2 :P

anywho, just like the guys at ocp i decided to fix him up, so i have just spent the last 5 hours burning myself with the glue gun again and trying to remember my process of building my armour.

anywho, 5 hours later here is the completed (minus painting) left arm:

i will get round to painting it when i have some spare cash to buy paint, been an expensive month what with xmas, other halfs birthday and on sunday is our anniversary O_o

anywho, hopefully you guys will still be interested to see my progress after i just left you all in the lurch midway through my project (my bad)

anywho, onwards and upwards. time to make a robo-thigh

Hey Dude,

Thats some serious work you've done there, I saw the first link Johan provided for one of the earliest Robocop cardboard creations. By comparison it is a very older model ;)

However, I noticed that the guy who did create his suit used plaster to reinforce it so that the suit was stronger and less likely to fall apart - of course being cardboard and all ;)

I saw your video on the airsoft machine gun... very nice :D Where abouts in the UK are you from? I too am a fellow Londoner based in Surrey, used to live in Islington, Angel but moved to Chessington in 2003 and later to Epsom in 2007.

Anyway matey, your work is a cut above some real suits that have been created so you should be very proud. Personally, like you I have the observation for detail and for short bursts, I have energy for really quality work - but as you get older you tend to have less patience and desire to want to do it. Im only 26 mind you, but I have been very career driven at the moment so im focusing on getting my MCSE.

Good luck with the rest of the suit, looking forward to more of your work :D

PEACE!

thank you babifrence. i live in ashford, kent and i am even younger than you, 24 u old git :)

i was gonna opt for the plaster route but one thing i do lack is patients for waiting for stuff like plaster to dry, does my nut in!

all of the parts are surprisingly solid (with the exception of the flexible mid section)

i agree with the short burst thing, i start something and its all i do for a few weeks, then i stop and move onto somethign else, i eventually get back round to most things but after ive done some other stuff first.

anywho, onto the legs, will spend a few hours on one then post up what i get done.

right so three hours later i have done the rough parts for the right thigh AND calf :) each is made up of about 5 parts and he;d tpgether by tape so i can untape then to trace them for the left leg before i begin the real work on the right one.

as i said before these are just rough and this is how all of the pasrt start their wonderful journey towarsd being robo armour :P

anywho, thigh:

when will the suit be finished? well i wanted it finished mnonths ago O_o so who knows, but all i ahve left to do is legs so its not far from being done :)

and i agree, cardboard is brilliant stuff, and most importantly cardboard is FREE!!! i get all of my boxes from work and they are all pretty thick, all my colleagues think im mad when they see me going home with a big pile of boxes, some ask if im moving house or having a car boot sale, when i tell them im making a robocop suit they think im insane, its about this time i tell them about the minigun and that relinquishes any doubt in their minds, and i am infact insane, i'll let you make you own minds up :)

Well it'll be great to see it finished... whenever that may be

Are you using single layer cardboard for construction? I'm using thin bits of wood (toothpick thin) for reinforcing the body parts, attaching the card, then overlaying that with paper-mache to make it nice and solid!

-----------------------------------

meathead316

Tue Jan 13, 2009 3:00 am

-----------------------------------

meh paper mache is essy, takes ages to dry and is a lot of faffing around.

the cardboard im using is 3mm thick and is only single ply as it needs to be flexible enough to bend intot he correct chape as robo is all curves. only a few parst are a single sheet thick, where some parts are as much as 4 sheets thick. all parst are glues together then the whole thing is coated in at least one layer of tape which holds it all together nicely. all of th parts are really solid, i ahve no fear of dropping the or anything, wouldnt wanna stand on a part tho :P

right i am now gonna begin really working on the tight, will popst pics up in a few hours

hopefully if you go back a few pages and look at my original torso you can see from these new pics that the version 2 suit has the proportions and structure of the chest a lot more accurate.

gonna start with the black abdominal section first (that way i can build the chest section loose enough to fit over it.... i didnt do that last time round and it was a very unconfortably tight fit, and bending forwards was impossible!), and should have some of it done tomorrow/day after.

meathead316

Thu Feb 02, 2012 12:14 pm

-----------------------------------

update time. As I mentioned Im starting with the abdominal area so that i can build the chest to fit on top of it. Now the plan is to have it in many pieces so that i can actually bend over forwards. It will be four pieces, the upper abdominal area, the cod piece and then the two rings inbetween. The space of 20mm between each piece there will be nothing but under suit, I'm hoping that will give me enough leeway to at least be able to bend forward 45 degrees but we shall see!

All of the bits will have velcro on the back, and the other bit of velcro sewn onto the the undersuit (that way i can remove all pieces and wash the undersuit if need be)

so far ive completely finished (minus velcro) the two ring pieces. I'm now starting on the upper chest piece and will post pics of what ive done when i finish building today in about 2 hours.

-----------------------------------

Good idea man.My first suit was cardboard and I used a ridgid kind of foam for the body, looked good but couldnt bend at all LOL. Cardboard is surprisingly very warm to wear to so you'll def need to wash the undersuit

all cardboard parts will be at least 3 layers thick, so i think the suit will literally cook me while wearing it!

here is a pic of the 2 abdominal rings (one front, one back) along with what ive started on the upper abdominal area.

http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/8600/dscn3877.jpg

-----------------------------------

The Upper abdominal area is now completely built, but isnt black yet as im gonna wait to do that until after ive attached velcro, and i wont knoe where thats going until ive made the chest plate. bute before i can build the chest plate there is one more part of the black undersuit needed to be constructed, the neck.

but for now here are the pics of the abdominal area:

the torso is now one solid piece, not sure where i want to cut it in half to make it wearable. i want it to be as seamless as possible. and as i want to be able to dress my self, it will ahve to be, put back on, then arms, then chest (arms before chest because when you have the arms on you have limited movement.)

go back to sleep Sir, no major updates today.

I have bulked up the front of the robo-diaper and also started on the back which is a lot harder than i thought it would be as he kinda has a curved backside, and having the cardboard curve both horizontally and vertically is quite difficult.... but its coming along nicely

will post pics of this part when ive finished bulking up the back tomorrow.

You may have noticed that i am slowly building the suit up in stages.

stage 1 was to make a rough template for each part
stage 2 (what im on now) is to bulk each part up and add any major structural details.
stage 3 will be to add straps/velcro etc and try it all on and make adjustments where nessisary to make it all fit correctly
stage 4 will be to go back to each part and add the final details
stage 5 classified
stage 6 will be to prep each part for painting
stage 7 is primer paint and lacquer
stage 8 is wear it and look awesome

Hey cheif, good plan on he insides, i wouldnt want it getting all soggy and falling apart!

I was having a play with the two torso halves trying to come up with the best way to fix them to my body and i think ive sussed it now. the back will have velcro straps (think back pack straps bit each one cut in half) then they will fasten to the under suit over each shoulder and around my chest. then the front half of the torso will attach via velcro to the back piece just by pushing it in place.

anywho, as for update on the codpiece, check out my robocock! (what else would you call it?!!!)

-----------------------------------

yo yo yo

Firstly let me say thank you to everyone who is following this build, your comments and suggestions mean a lot and really do help to keep me motivated to finish it this time!

I will make sure the robo-diaper is reinforced as much as possible, as it stands now its around 15mm thick so is pretty darn strong!

Did a lot today, although sadly not a lot of building, most of what i did was faff about with the legs and robo-diaper and tweeking them to make them fit perfectly before i start adding all the details to them.

After about 3 hours using a sturdy belt and some shoelaces to tie each piece together (will use velcro for the final version) it all fit perfectly and i was able to walk and move pretty well.

It dawned on me that one aspect that i was really aiming for may be harder than i thought. I want to be able to put the whoel thing on unaided, all f which seemed doable until i was putting on my shoes with my very rough robo foot. "isnt this held onto the calf by a piston" i thought.... but meh, thats a challenge for another day.

What I did start doing though was work on the thighs. As you saw from previous posts, i already have the basic thigh shape sorted, so i started with the top making the circular recesses.

progress will be kind slow on the legs and arms (when i get to them) as im doing the left and the right at the same time so i can just flip a piece over, draw round it and use it for the other side to maintain symertry and save time and effort remeasuring.

anyways, enough babble, heres a pic:

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/3010/dscn4357g.jpg

I should have the upper part of both thighs done by tomorrow, stay tuned!

Sun May 13, 2012 11:35 pm

-----------------------------------

Hi

So Ive bulked up the thighs now so they hold their shape, and also its crucial that all parts are at least 3 layers thick as i carve all the details 2 layers deep.

Anyways, the thighs are rock solid and instead of carving in the detail on the outer and inner thighs, i decided to build up the fronts:

http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/2511/dscn4364d.jpghttp://img513.imageshack.us/img513/8273/dscn4365m.jpghttp://img824.imageshack.us/img824/4436/dscn4366d.jpg
another angle

other than carving the other details there is very little left to do to the thighs, im not going to add the "trim" around the top yet incase i need to shave a bit off to make it fit better, something i wont know until ive done all pieces in this fashion.

so tomorrow i will carve out the final thigh details and then start building up the lower legs including building the pistons (which i havent even started yet...)

bye bye for now

didnt have much time to work on it today and havent built ny more of the lower legs. I have measured out various parts though so it should be just a case of cut out and stick on.

I have also figured out a genius solution to be able to put the pistons and shoes on myself while wearing the suit, but more on that later

Ummm, a new suit, pretty much talked myself into it now as soon as I finish my arcade cabinet project. There is a super hero convention here next year so gives me a good deadline. So far I am planning a Robo 1 screen suit, latex for the soft parts and resin coated foam for the armour. A lot of work but a fun build. Ive learned alot from my other builds so time to put it to use :)

the thighs however dont fit on either leg.

i would tke bigger pics but bigger pics take aaaaaages to upload, and besides, higher es means u can see all the flaws better! :P

update time!

The feet have proved more troublesome that id expected, but id rather take my time and keep it as accurate as i can as it will payoff in the long run.

firstly i starter by making 1 leg piston (only one as i didnt have enough cardboard tube, must by more tin foil and baking paper as they have the different size tubes i need, no idea what ills do with all that foil and baking paper tho...)

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/5939/dscn4400n.jpghttp://img140.imageshack.us/img140/7186/dscn4399do.jpghttp://img32.imageshack.us/img32/6721/dscn4401nj.jpghttp://img225.imageshack.us/img225/548/dscn4402z.jpg

So thats all for today, tomorrow im hoping to get the feet finished

The gloves will be quite tricky i imagine as hey have to be solid yet flexible, i did make one glove before and it was ok ish, but my new ones will be better as i have a few ideas floating around in my head and im sure at least 1 of them HAS to work! but before tht ive gotta finish the feet, do the upper arms, lower arms and the forearms, only then will i tackle the gloves so stay tuned!

isnt fibre glass resin expensive? toxic? and once dry very brittle and fragile?

i want my suit to be robust (and cheap) i was gonna go for the wrap it (neatly this time) in tape method. and if i get really wide tape there will be less join lines.

i already did this to the robo-abs i made, but i may change my mind...

any ways, these robo-toes aint gonna build them selves!

you can get inexpensive resin at the local hardware store. as far as it being brittle, Yes. On its own it is fairly brittle. the fiberglass mat and lack of resin used gives a piece its strength. However, people use it all the time on cardboard buildups, mainly because it does make the board hard, and gives it some longevity. also better to paint. as far as toxic, sure, if you stick your head into a bucket of resin, or drink the catalyst, or do a layup in a small enclosed room, with no ventilation, but then what isn't toxic these days LOL. thinner more expensive resin works better for cardboards, so it can absorb easier. Tape sounds like just as much work, but it looks great either way. good luck with the build.

-----------------------------------

ill figure out finishing it when i come to it, probably will be tape as its very very cheap and wont make the parts any thicker and is mega strong while still remaining flexible ish, well not flexible as in bendy but flexible as in if hit it wont crack... man i suck at explaining stuff!

anyways, the robo-toes are done:

http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/4975/dscn4404w.jpghttp://img20.imageshack.us/img20/3670/dscn4405g.jpghttp://img39.imageshack.us/img39/2555/dscn4406i.jpg

its all still a very awkward fit, im hoping it will be rectified when i attach the lower leg to the upper leg at the knee and cut the foot in half so i can bend my toes.

thats all for today, tomorrow ill start on the heel area.

bye bye for now |)

Gosh that leg sure it purty... The level of attention to detail on this project has made it so much more than 'just' a cardboard Robocop suit... but not as good as this video does:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz2Y5upp-T8&feature=youtu.be

I needed to know whether the toes and piston were moving as they should be and as you cans ee from the video they do |)

So thats the waist down pretty much done, only a case of making hinges at the knee and ankle out of plastic so all the parts stay aligned as they should and dont slip up/down or rotate around my leg.

So now I am moving onto the upper arms next and will crack on with that tomorrow/day after.

ive done some more work on the arms :) i have taken a slightly different approach than i did for the legs, instead of doing uppers, then lowers, im kinda just doing the whle lot at the same time.

the lowers are built up and just need details carving into them. the uppers still require a fair bit of work (still trying to figure out the best way to do the rounded bit at the shoulder)

heres a pic:

So thats the arms now done! :)

hats next on the agenda you ask? The next thing I am bulding is the gloves, but before i do im going to make them platic washer inserts for the arms, and also make some for the knees and ankles. I will then wear it all and make a test video to see if everything moves as it should because if i need to make the arms shorter or longer a bit (lets hope not) then the gloves would have to be altered also) So my next update should be a video :)

Elbow hinges are now installed, as are knees and ankles. The legs are now complete as one piece from hip to toe and are massive!

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/6172/dscn4772.jpghttp://img546.imageshack.us/img546/7056/dscn4770n.jpg

So i tried the legs on and there is a slight problem, having the attchment to my belt at the top of each thigh (hip area) severly restricts movement, im hoping just lowering the attachment point about 6 inches down the inside of the thigh will fix this, if not ive gotta thick up some other way to keep my "robo trousers" up

the next thing on my "to do" list is to make attachments for the arms and torso now, so im gonna have a play with that so i can make a test fitting video.

ciao for now

-----------------------------------

meathead316

Fri Jun 22, 2012 9:39 pm

-----------------------------------

update time!!!

I have torn off ALL the plastic attchments at the knees and ankles as they were all starting to break away. I knew they would and it was just a test fit anyway. I noticed that the glue just peeled straight off of the plastic, so i have drilled lots and lots and lost of holes in the plastic to give the glue something to grab onto.

I have also started on the undersuit. i have sew velcro on the shoulder area and attched the other side onto the back piece. also the back piece has velcro straps around the waist section.

The front and back also has four (soon to be 8 when i order more) very strong magnets on each half to hold them together. The plan is to velcro the back on, then just pop the front on.... and it works!

then its just a case of putting an arm half on and using the edge of a door or something to lean againt to pust it up my arm.

Im not going to use straps to keep the arms up (as i wont be abel to fasten them myself and being able to suit up unaided is an aspect of my suit i aim to keep) so instead i think that once i have built the hands, just wearing them will keep the arms from falling down. Unfortunatly i wont know for sure until i build them so well have to wait and see.

I have also attached velcro to the top of the thighs and with a tight belt around my waist they keep the legs up nicely.

Im gonna glue all the hinge attachments back on and reinforce everything then all thats left fitting wise is the codpiece (which is giving me grief) and buying a cheap pair of black shoes to go into the feet permanently.

i will then make a video.

stay tuned!

oh and before all the hinges were torn out i could resist trying it all on....

fuck me its beautiful! (pardon my french!) no pics tho, gonna keep ypu in suspence until i do the video |)

I'm am looking forward to this.

Meathead, what are you going to do to protect the cardboard? I'm guessing like your earlier version you will paint it but is there anything else you can do to keep it safe?

Think like varnish on wood. It would be a shame for all your hard work to be ruined by some rain or an unfortunate mishap.

-----------------------------------

meathead316

Fri Jun 22, 2012 9:58 pm

-----------------------------------

at present the plan is to use pvc tape to carefully and neatly cover everything (yes it will take almost forever)

I know this method will not be bang on perfectly smooth, but neither is cardboard anyway and at present it looks ok right....

Also im gonna push the boat out and get the widest tape i can find so there are as few imperfections as possible.

If you go back a few pages you will see I already did the abdominal section using this method.

Im not going to fibre glass it, im not going to plastic coat it and im not going to paper mache it. The cardboard as is is more than strong enough, but it wont wake paint as is, and isnt water proof so rain and/or sweat will kill all my hard work. So covering it in tape (inside and out) will give me a good base for painting and make everything a tad stronger and watertight.

yo yo yo!!!

http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/8428/dscn4804m.jpghttp://img43.imageshack.us/img43/9990/dscn4803w.jpg
The velcro strap on each shoulder fastens it to my undersuit. The front is then simple attached by magnets (4 at present but want to install more). In the pic the magnets have been covered by a thin sheet of cardboard (thin grey rectangles near the velcro) to prevent the magnets pulling away from the piece.

So what else have I done? I have now reattached all of the joints, and as a result im down to my last glue stick... again (ordered more already:)) The legs have been reassembled and I have finally gotten round to building the other leg piston!

So, finally, the moment you have been eagerly waiting for (i hope...) the video of me wearing what I have built so far!

PLEASE NOTE

I intend to hold the arms up with no straps, instead i was hoping that just having the gloves on would keep them up, but as i havent made the gloves yet i needed an alternative for the purpose of the video... Batman gauntlets!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPP7JxDAouM&list=UUxfsmJ1PYxWamP-l2OsIrFw&index=1&feature=plcp

As you can see it all fits and moves pretty well... all except for the cod piece, so when my glue gets here i will adjust it accordingly and also sew onto my undersuit velcro for the abdominal bands between the codpiece and torso.

Thats all for now!

Hello again!

Ive got a few pics of the basic jist of the gloves. Sorry it took so long but I need to do some careful planning for he hands to make sure they fit properly and work how i want them (they are cardboard and not latex after all)

Cheers for the PT! (Been a member for years and still dont really know what they do...)

I was considering using some sort of glove for the base, but then gave up on that idea when i starting toying with other plans for the gloves to make them as awesome as possible, and if i can get them how i want them, they will be the most awesome robo gloves ever (yes modest i know :P)

Today i spent about 2 hours just building up the detail on the fingers, and all i got done was like 3 of them (not including closing the ends) so they are taking ages, and as they are all the same its very monotinous, but i shall persist and hopefully tomorrow i have enough fingers done for a whole hand.

also had an interesting idea for finising the suit involving highbuild primer, but will buy a can and have a play before i bore you wth any details!
