RoboDoc - New Robo Documentary
-----------------------------------
Seems we´ll be getting a brand new RoboCop Documentary. RoboDoc will be a feature length documentary from the makers of 'Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II' and 'You're so cool, Brewster! The Story of Fight Night'.

Supported by a massive amount of RoboCop cast and crew, this documentary sets out to give the definitive view on the films 30 year legacy as well as the impact it has had on fans and the genre itself.

Check their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/RoboDoc2017/

Sounds interesting!

Wow nice find.

Looks like they've got loads of interviews lined up!

We will have to get these people behind it to come on here to promote it... Ah wait a minute that never happens...

Though I can't see much of a call for this product a part from to a small hardcore fan base...

Very cool! As far as I know the only documentaries produced about Robocop were for DVD's and such, so this will be the first chance to get an outside take on it, as in not designed to sell the movie... not that there is some juicy drama the studio is trying to hide or anything but it will be nice to see a fresh take on it, I just hope that this documentary is about more than just the making of the first film, because that is what all the sort of documentaries about Robocop that we have seen so far would be all about... as you guys know I would be just as interested if not way more interested to see a documentary about Robocop comics than Robocop movies, for example. Either way though it is great to see the love for Robo and I'm sure the documentary will be great no matter what because they couldn't have a better subject to work with... I could b biased about that last bit but probably not.

Ah, this can't come out soon enough! I love me some documentaries and I find Robo being a topic there isn't too much on (unless it's from the Archive). Looking forward to it! Love the poster they made - really reminds me of how I actually saw RoboCop when I was 3... only the picture quality wasn't nearly as good :D

Not very hyped for this. We've already seen and heard everything there is to know about the first movie. I messaged the creator, asking if they were going to look into the sequels as there is little to no information on them - he said they were aiming to do so.

You're right. We know almost everything there is to tell about the movie and production and whatnot and you'd think those involved would get bored with telling the same stories over and over. But, personally, I can't get enough. And there are still new things I'm learning and seeing even presently. After years of really wanting to know, I found out today where they filmed the drug factory scene and that it's still standing; although now it's a concert venue. I'm still finding new metaphors within the story and junk like that too.
I'm with you. I do hope they focus on the sequels and other aspects of the franchise more than those who've done retrospectives in the past. And from what I can tell from their other docs it seems they delve pretty deep into their subject matter. I think at least one of them went well over three hours. I want to see interviews with Dekker, Burke, Frank Miller, Walon Green, Noonan, ROB BOTTIN!!! My God, they have SD Nemeth booked!!
Most of all I think their hearts are really in this and that makes me excited. The artist rendering for their header photo showing a different perspective of the classic Robo poster image is inspired. And the other one, with the seven year old watching the movie (probably past his bedtime) with the Robo action figures around....I got a little misty. To quote RoboHell, "That's all of us."

Nancy Allen now confirmed for this as well. I donated yesterday to it and hope they get their target and the project can go ahead. They also confirmed they will be covering the sequels for this documentary too, so this might be the best we get to any sort of Robo 2/3 special features.

They've recently added Dekker and Paul McCrane (who I think has never talked about Robo), among many other awesome folks so I think we'll definitely get if not new info, then at least good unheard stories and such. And seeing Dekker, Mark Irwin and a couple other names tells me they will put some attention to the other films, which indeed is awesome and probably the closest we'll get to special features for the other films this side of those old Cinefantasique articles.

All-told, this seems pretty kickass to me. I just kicked it a few bucks myself. It's almost totally funded already so I look forward to seeing this bad boy. (Also looking forward to that bitchin' poster they got, that is a real beautiful work there.)

I still have to contribute (man, bucks are flying this month), but I agree, it´s nice to see people from the sequels there, as well as new "old" faces (McCrane talking about the flick) and some technical workers. I think it´ll be interesting enough for us.

Indeed, they now are at a stretch goal and yesterday we got Angie Bolling and Belinda Bauer on-board. Like I said, if nothing else we oughta get some great reminiscence of experiences from people we're rarely if ever heard talking about Robo. :)

4-odd more hours to go - We'll be guaranteed of at least one new piece of Robo awesomeness next year!

Cool, but is it going to be 15-20 thrown in at the end? Sort of like the book recently, which is a book about the first movie with a few bonus pages about the 'legacy'. To me it is not the 'legacy'. To me Robocop 2 is as much a movie as Robocop. To me it is much more interesting to learn the history of how the comic license changed hands over the past 25 years than learn, yet again, Verhoeven's cinematic history and how Weller trained with a famous mime. That should be in there too, but the Marvel comics series isn't just a footnote in the 'legacy' to me, it is another essential part of the franchise. I have been watching a lot of Star Trek recently, and that would be like seeing an advertisement for a documentary about Star Trek as a whole, then it spends an hour and a half talking about the original series and then all the other shows, comics, and movies were squeezed into the last hour. That would be a disservice to the franchise. If you want to do a documentary about the first movie, do that. But if you claim to cover the entire franchise and shoehorn all the comics, sequels, and shows into one section about the 'legacy' then I would find that to be downright disrespectful. I'm not saying this documentary is going that route, but if it does I will consider it a disrespect to this community. If you want to make a documentary for the masses who have only vaguely heard about Robocop that is fine, but if they are making something that appeals to the hardcore fans as they claimed they had better give the sequels, shows, and comics the attention they deserve. Basically, if they spend more time talking about the first movie than all the comics put together they have missed the point.

Yeah I'm kinda in the same boat. As much as I love any and as much info as I can get my hands on from the first movie, it's been done to death. Don't get me wrong, I'll very happily revel in all the same stories from all the same people about R1 not to mention the new perspectives from some of the more background cast and crew. I can't wait to see if they have some footage or stills or anecdotes from R1 I haven't seen yet. I still can't believe they got S.D Nemeth!! I very much welcome all the '87 stuff they can cram in there. But the rest of the property desperately needs exploring. The series, all the comic stuff, the sequels, the cartoons, the amazing figures/statues through the years, the chicken commercials, the noodle commercials, Robo VS Pee-Wee VS ED-209.
I have a sneaking feeling, like pimp said, it'll be more or less an afterthought but they got Ed Naha and some people who worked exclusively on R2 so there's a little hope I guess for some post 1987 stuff. Now they just need Burke and Dekker and Miller and Lee Sullivan and Nikko and Eden and people like that. We shall see

Growing up there was a time I loved R2 more than the 1st, I actually saw that in the theaters several times. I've been wanting some sort of book or documentary digging deep into that film and we just haven't hadn't yet, we keep getting little bits like pimp said.

Im happy that Robo is getting love and is still relevant in some eyes, but I would love to see someone take a crack at R2 like they are doing for this doc.

When I become independently wealthy, I'll get y'all together and we can make it.

Well, at least they´re trying. And have good people you never hear on a Robointerview talking here for the first time. Don´t know how they´ll deal with the sequels, but Dekker is there, Tom Noonan, Galen Gorg, Mark Irwin... I think it´ll be the closest to the sequel´s "featurettes" we will get. In more than 20 years we didn´t get an official making of of the rest of the parts from the franchise, so it´s good to see and hear people from 2 & 3 talking about it. Also, Neumeier is on board as part of the team, so who knows.

I happily contributed to it, to get it on Blu Ray. Now it´s time to wait for it.

It's a not a contest but there are definitely bigger RoboCop fans than me, with more robo stuff, and some of those people will appear in the doc to represent us.

I share the others' skepticism about the other films and parts of the franchise getting overlooked as well, but I'm with this. I'll admit a fair bit of focus will be on the original, as is expected, but even then I don't think those other parts will really be overloooked. At the very least, I truly don't think they'll be nearly as overlooked or shoved aside as they have been in the past.

I like this, I feel they are making a valiant and real effort at as much as they can. I wouldn't have coughed up dough for it otherwise. I look forward to what they bring us next year.

"Gathering people from the sequels and tv series now. So yes we will be covering those I hope the fans are happy about that. "

So, while it´s not sure how many screen time the sequels and TV shows will have, they´re working on getting people from the rest of the series. Which is not bad.

If they went to the trouble of getting Tom Noonan, Galen Gorg, Belinda Bauer, Angie Bolling, Thomas Irvine, Mark Irwin for RoboCop 2 and Fred Dekker (so far) for 3, then hopefully they do more than just have all the other movies and sequels crammed in at the end. Fingers crossed.

Personally I am not satisfied with just covering the sequels too. The movies are not my favorite part of the Robocop "legacy". The comics are. The most expensive Robocop item I own is the Robocop vs. Terminator gallery edition. I don't expect anyone to agree with me, but just from where I am sitting the movies are only a small part of the franchise.

I actually agree and that's why I felt the "Definitive History" book was lacking. Not only were those sections pathetically short and not really informative, they also had some mistakes in there.
I'd love it if they got more people involved in this, people from beyond the movies, but it's unlikely to happen, unfortunately.

Well I can't ever say the Robo films are a 'small' part of the whole deal - This started with the film(s); without it/them there would be no comics. That said, I understand to a degree, and agree in that I too would like to see something more in-depth in that regard as well. Of course, I want in-depth looks at all of it, myself. But yes the comics are important and worth exploring. However like 93 said, I too feel they, along with other pieces of the 'legacy' or 'franchise', may never be looked at too hard. Again though, I have hope this project will give us something more than we've gotten before, which will be much more than we'd have gotten otherwise.

Speaking of cameo appearances! I agree, BTW. You're not far from 20 years coming on being the spot for Robo on the interwebs, J-man, quite something there, I'd say. I am now wondering if this Robo documentary will be up to date. It occurs to me that the Robocop film trilogy ended over 20 years ago so just focusing on that part of the franchise doesn't really give a good sense of where Robocop is at today. Obviously Robocop's biggest ventures in the past few years have been in comics and toys/statues. OK, this is just me repeating my same point, but you can't blame me for hoping that the creators of this doc will see one of my messages and realize that the movies are only a small part of the overall Robocop experience, at least to me.

What about Simon Furman? he also did a great job on the RoboCop Marvel comics

He would be great too. Aside from maybe Robocop vs. Terminator, he definitely wrote the best Robocop comics. I mentioned Steven Grant because he is the most prolific Robocop writer but there are plenty of great ones to choose from. Alan Grant, who wrote the first run on the Marvel stuff as well as the first two adaption, would be awesome too as he is probably my favorite comic writer of all time and has contributed more to Batman than just about anyone. It doesn't matter who they pick really, as long as they give Robocop comic creators some recognition in this doc!

I doubt he´d say cute things about it  I interviewed him for a magazine I did some years ago, and asked him about his Robo run. He felt sad an angry because the direction of the comic, and he asked to leave the title after 10 issues.

It´s kinda ironic, as he looks he was in peace with the character, as you´d see him saying how great the first film it was, and seeing him on some events or screenings. Too bad he couldn´t sit for a moment.

Anyway, the RoboDoc it´s looking good. And all the people they got were in the so called "Phase 1"...

I respect Weller's choice. That said, I also respect the filmmakers right to explore the history of Weller's relationship with the character. I think it would be fascinating for them to comment on not just his departure from the series after Robocop 2 but also the mixed emotions he displayed in time since then.

Hmmm, I honestly couldn't tell you my true feelings about Weller staying out of this, but I can respect it as well. Here's why.

-He's a professor of Roman History at Syracuse.
-He's a recent father, So there's that. It takes energy.
-I'm sure his schedule is full.
-I'm sure he feels he's said all he can remember or cares to talk about.

While I'm happy that this project is going on, I agree with all formerly listed aspects of this documentary. I'm excited to see them cover the cartoons and comics. At least in part.

At this stage Dr. Peter Weller has declined all invitations to participate in the documentary and we must respect his wishes. We do however, have a wealth of archive interviews.

It only stands to reason that Barbara did have some free time to 'fit Clarence in' and Nikko was the result. Think about it, how else would she know how to hack into an Enforcement Droid or know where to find the tracking beacon on a Crime Prevention Unit? Her mom, who was obviously corrupted by Boddicker, was no doubt in a position to obtain such information. A fitting little family reunion pic if you ask me. 😉

I would love to see some coverage but it is pretty unlikely. The cartoons are the bastard child of many franchises, Robo being no exception. I would love to see interviews with some of the creators or producers. It would be great to hear about how they came up with the concept of turning a violent R rated series into a cartoon for kids. Neither series lasted more than one season and I'd be interested to hear if they had anything else planned for future seasons. Also, I loved the toys for Alpha Commando as a kid, and since the toys seemed to be the main point of Alpha Commando It would be great to hear more about how they came to fruition. Unlikely, but I can hope.

While I´m one of the fews that I don´t want to kill the whole cast and crew of PD, I think they didn´t cover the miniseries either, right?. Which is bad, as I´d like to know facts from every RoboIncarnation. I understand how people don´t like the 4 films, but covering the whole RoboCop story should include these as well. And the cartoons, yep.

Maybe they´ll mention the cartoons at some point and include some images, but no interviews about these productions. Who knows.

I don't think they'd be able to hide their disdain for how pitiful it turned out. They'd need to subject Joseph Grant to hefty criticism to gain an understanding of why.

They were looking for a Canadian cameraman, so there's a chance someone from it is in the "final Phase 4". The only person from PD I'd be interested in is Maurice Dean Wint. He played a good part and could offer a comparison between filming on the series (in one of the best eps, 'OFFICER MISSING') and the later one.

But is there really much demand for it? Why waste hours shooting and editing content for an incarnation that is universally loathed by the fans? I appreciate a minority liked it, but perhaps they could pool their resources together and do an online piece on it.

While I understand the hate, it´s still RoboCop. If you´re planning to do a "classic Robo" retrospective, that was the final TV show of the character. Same if you talk about Robo-videogames: you can talk about the fun and good looking arcade games, but there´s still the shitty, hard to move RoboCop 3 for SNES or Mega Drive :b

There is a 4 hour long documentary about Tom Petty on Netflix. If someone took the time to make that and there are people willing to sit through it, then getting the comics and shows into a Robocop documentary should be no problem. This is the digital age, after all. Who said all movies have to be the same length? Shit, with the success of the 3 hour extended edition of Batman vs Superman its clear there is a market for longer films. Especially since no one is gonna be watching it in the theater it can be as long as they want. Who here wouldn't sit through 4 hours of Robocop documentary? Especially if that meant coverage of some of the more obscure aspects of our fandom? I imagine its gonna take at least an hour to slog though the whole 'Weller trained with a mime which helped him give a great performance' or 'Verhoeven seemed like an angry madman but it was all passion to make Robocop the best film it could be' and all those other points we've heard a million times. Imagine we could just skip past that and dig into some info we have never heard before? Sure, that is impossible because they are making a documentary for casual fans as much as us, but I can hope, right? Is it so wrong to hope they cover my favorite aspect of the Robocop franchise, comics? Sure, Robocop has appeared in 4 films which is a lot of ground to cover, but if you are counting the number of stories he has appeared in the movies are just a tiny part of the overall tapestry. There are way more comics than movies, therefore the comics should be covered. Shit, at this point I would much, much rather have a documentary solely about the Robocop comics than anything going over the first film. Is the first film the most important? Yes, but between the documentaries that are on the DVD as well as various other interviews and footage we've come across over the years is there really anything new to say? In my opinion the first movie should be just a fraction of the documentary, the familiar starting point which launches into a more in depth exploration of the whole franchise. And if it takes 4 hours to do it right, that's fine with me. 6 hours? Sure, why not? They could even split it up into episodes if they are worried about the run time. They each film could have an hour long episode devoted to it, with the comics getting an episode and the shows getting one etc. That is not an unreasonable proportion to ask for. I am not demanding that the comics be the central focus, I just don't want them ignored. Because then that is not really a comprehensive Robodoc, now is it?

Maybe you should make that doc then if you feel passionate about it?

The film-makers clearly want to focus on the first film from the perspective of 30 years after it was made. That's the difference between it and the original making of docs -

"A fully independent retrospective into the making of 'RoboCop' and its cultural impact over the last 30 years. Supported by dozens of the original cast and crew 'RoboDoc' is made by fans of the movie for fans of the movie."

The longer you make a doc, the costlier it is and the lesser size of an audience will watch it.

Maybe you should make that doc then if you feel passionate about it?

Well, I could write a good treatment for it since writing is what I go to school for. I'm no documentarian though, nor do I own a camera. I don't have the time or resources to do it justice, but since there is a team of people out there who have both the time and the resources to do such a thing, and are making a documentary about Robocop right now, I'm just hoping they could touch on the topic, and maybe use some of the resources they have used to reach out to people connected with Robocop's past to get someone from the comics field.

Now, I am busy with school and many other things, so I definitely can't make a full fledged documentary on Robocop comics, but this does give me a good idea for a little video or a video series. I have an almost complete Robocop comics collection, only missing the Robocop 3 series from Dark Horse. There are also a bunch of variant covers I don't have, but they are not essential and I do actually have a bunch from the Avatar series. So maybe I could make a video or series of videos going through my collection, going over the history as I do.

What do you guys think? Should I pursue this project? Also, do you think it would be best to make one long video going over the whole history, or would it be better to do a separate video for each publisher? Also, should I go for a documentary approach, or would a review series be better? I kind of like the idea of reviewing each publisher's output individually though that does get away from the documentary approach. Also, I am friends with Lee Sullivan on facebook like many of you are, so there is a chance I could ask him a couple questions or such. Might be possible to get other people involved from various other publishers, but if that's the case I definitely would not be able to start this project until this summer once I have graduated college and have more free time on my hands.

This is definitely something I will have to think about a lot before starting. I would basically be filming it off my phone unless I can find a friend with a camera to borrow. I would also want to fill the couple little holes in my collection, something I won't have the money to do for a while. Fortunately I already have the most expensive part, the RvT artist's edition. But let me know what you guys think. Maybe it would be best to wait until after the documentary comes out because there is a small chance they will actually go over this material. But if they don't do a good job I am definitely open to the idea of stepping in and documenting the comics in some more comprehensive way.

Not a bad idea. I have thought about using Kickstarter before but have always been hesitant. Still, it seems like a good idea for this project. I would definitely need your guys help spreading it though, because my network of friends with steady income is rather limited. But even if it was just a few bucks to get some of the rarer variant covers that could help. Also, funds were raised on an episode by episode basis there is always the chance that it catches on and gets more support as it goes along. Still, I am not too familiar with Kickstart so I am still wary, but it couldn't hurt to at least try.

Shit man if you feel that froggy, go for it. Kickstarter might be worth considering for sure. My suggestions - I'd wait 'til after RoboDoc's release to be sure, otherwise I'd lean more to a review series unless you can get a lot of good background from folks involved to make it more a documentary, and either way I'd split it up by publisher or series/arc. If you do a doc maybe a long video but still sectioned off so. Anyway, just my thoughts there.

Physical ones. After all, I tt wouldn't be too exciting filming my screen. I have physical copies of every other Robocop comic but this series has slipped by me. Probably because it's just an adaption and it doesn't come in a snazzy single volume like the Marvel adaptions of the first two movies.

At this point its just an idea, however. If the Robodoc covers the subject I will be content and might just do a text review of the entire series or something like that. I've wanted to go through and read them all in order from Marvel to Boom but that is a time consuming effort for someone in college who also regularly reads other comics. But mark my words, if I feel the documentary doesn't give enough love to the comics I will step in at some point and make sure that the topic is covered in depth. Because, first movie aside, the comics are the best part of the Robocop franchise.

Thanks for the thought! Sorry to hear you lost your comics but at least I am not the only one who has lost something Robocop related lately haha. But the Robocop 3 comics are very cheap to pick up, the only reason I haven't got around to it is because every time I buy comics I wind up buying stuff I am more interested in reading. The only reason I have to get the adaptions is to have the full Robocop comics collection, which I now have more reason to pursue. I'm not really in a rush to read them but you gotta have them.

1) How much they will include the VHS stuff? (some have bad video quality)
2) How much new stuff they have? (Compared to RoboCop Archive stuff). Or they will only "copy and paste" some stuff of this forum, like the "rain" of videos about RoboCop in 2013 to capitalise on the comming 2014 movie?

Just announced that the guys have received 4 hours of behind the scenes content from RoboCop 2 and 2 hours of content for RoboCop 3. As a result, and not to leave any great content out, the doc will now be split into 2 releases. RoboDoc (for the first movie) is the main release and the second release will have two sections, RoboDoc 2 (covering R2 and the Series) and RoboDoc 3 (covering R3 and and the characters legacy). Anyone who pledged for a DVD/Blu Ray copy of the doc will now get both and won't have to pledge any extra. :)

Will be interesting to see what content they have got for R2 and R3 and if it is the same or even more than Scream got for the release of their collectors editions of R2 and R3 recently (in Region A only). If so, I might not need to look for that multi-region blu-ray player after all!

Wow that's great news...

...for some people. I guess. But not me.

This is exactly what I feared when I heard about this Doc. What is supposed to be a comprehensive history of Robocop is going to be a lopsided mess. I'm sorry if I sound ungrateful, but having my favorite Robocop stuff smashed into the end is just disrespectful. I mean, they couldn't even give the legacy its own section? So all the comics, games, toys, and shows get lumped in with Robocop 3???

I can see it now. After watching hours of footage of people saying the same stuff about Robocop we've heard time and time again, a few images of toys and some clips from PD flash across the screen, while the narrator states that Robocop 3 sent Robo off the deep end and nobody cares about any of that stuff. Except me. The first Robodoc is of little interest to me. But the stuff I actually care about? Tossed aside, basically some bonus content tacked on the end.

Want to hear more about how Weller worked with a mime and Verhoeven wasn't American and Nancy Allen didn't want to cut her hair short? Then check out Robodoc. Do you want to hear some interesting facts about the less explored sides of Robocop history, like everything that has happened over the last 20 years? Stick to the internet, nerd!

When I first read that they are splitting this doc into two pieces I was thrilled. I thought to myself, finally someone is gonna take the time to talk about the movies separately from everything else. I guess I was naive for thinking all the shows, comics, games, toys, and much much more warranted their own documentary. What a chump I am. All I can say is I am glad I did not donate anything to this project, as this is not a Robodoc that represents my own interests as a fan of Robocop.

It might seem a bit harsh for me to be saying all this stuff. But I also think its harsh to shoehorn Robocop's legacy into a section about Robocop 3. I have seen the Robocop films a few times over the past year. But I have read the comics way more, and played with the action figures on my Robo shrine. I've probably spent more time watching the cartoons than the movies in recent years. Simply put, there is way more to Robo than the movies. So much, in fact, that all the merchandise and 'second rate' material far engulfs the films themselves. So why try to rewrite history?

Anyone wanna take bets on how much they talk about the comics? You might even make some serious cash by betting on them not mentioning them at all. I expect a minute long segment that mostly talks about Robocop vs Terminator and the Frank Miller adaptions. If the Robodoc does not mention every published that has put out Robocop comics it has failed, to me. There is just so much to talk about. Especially if this is supposed to be appealing to new fans as well as old. I'm sure anyone taking the time to watch a Robocop documentary is familiar with the trilogy. But are they familiar with the excellent Dark Horse series, Mortal Coils? Why not expose Robofans to new facets of the character instead of spending an entire film rattling on about the same stuff you can find on youtube or the Robocop DVD?

I know my dedication to the comics is pretty much unmatched. I am not too into the video games but I know some of you are and would love to learn more about them. Robocop toys have been pretty much the most important and consistent part of my Robocop fandom since birth. The movies are part of it too, but just one part of it. I want to see all these parts represented if the doc is to give us a true depcition of Robocop as a whole. Any one of these parts, games, toys, shows, comics, could really have its own feature length documentary. So lumping them all into the end of this one seems like a mistake. But more than a simple error, to me this news comes across as downright disrespectful.

Bah, I've said it elsewhere, I'll say it here. Beggars can't be choosers. Especially beggars that didn't even fork over anything. Honestly Pimp aside from your own self-centered attitude and skewed expectations I don't see this as any skin off your ass. Don't wanna watch it, then don't watch it. And certainly don't even talk about it if especially that's how you truly feel. Fuck me the best thing this franchise has gotten in 30 fucking years and all you can do is mope like someone killed your best friend.

I mean seriously if you've looked at all the folks listed to have been interviewed (many never before interviewed about RoboCop at all) and all what's in there and you think 95% of the shit is gonna be a re-hash of what's on our Criterion and 20th R1 releases you sir need a damn reality check.

You consider the admittedly overlooked comics to be the focal point of the franchise. I, however, don't. And frankly, I'm quite sure almost no one else - casual fan or Robo-Head - does either. You talk about rewriting history but at the end of the day, this all started with a film. You would have none of this if not for a piece of cinema. I admit the comics are neat, I enjoy and appreciate them as a serious fan would and believe they are certainly worthy of some kind of discussion and note absolutely, but to mouth barf and bitch so because those few sets of comics aren't seemingly 50% of this thing - A thing that isn't even out yet to even judge with, and a thing again is a about a character and franchise based off a movie - Just makes you seem rather like a spoiled brat throwing a tantrum. Which is not harsh, just plain shitty. Really shitty. ESPECIALLY given again you haven't even put anything down on this at all. If you HAD put something down I wouldn't be saying a Goddamn thing. But as you haven't well, sounds like it comes down to put up or shut up, and since you've clearly expressed you won't do the one, only leaves the other as an option doesn't it?

Bah, ok, that's harsh. You shouldn't shut up. But Jesus man you can and I feel better tone that shit down. I don't see it as disrespect. I don't think practically anyone else does either. I myself see it as a question of focus. The films were always gonna be top priority. I can't speak for you but I knew and wholly expected that going in. Shit I wasn't sure they'd even do the other films as much as they did, let alone include other things as much either. But they are. Yes I'm sure much of it will be stuff we've seen and know. But some of it simply isn't. And that alone is worth it. In some regards what we have otherwise and prior is next to nothing - About R2, R3, The Series, or indeed comics and toys and games.

Don't get me wrong, I to a considerably lesser degree understand and even share your sentiment - I wish they did more about the comics, and original/major toys. And yes games, which honestly would probably be my own big secondary focus. Each having having 2 or 3 hours on? I don't know but yes they could have quite a bit to them, I'll give ya that. But I do still believe they'll be able to mention and decently note that other stuff, including the comic series'. I don't believe they'll ignore it totally or give one nice remark about RvsT as you say. I'll admit I don't ever expect much anymore but that shit is overly cynical to the point of being a total dick.

And before it's even looked this way - This not like PD or R2014, this is not us getting shit for dinner and being forced to swallow it up and go for dessert. This is still arguably the best damn piece of Robo media since the original film and I'm sorry but the above's a level of contempt for that I can't let slide myself. All-told, slow your fucking roll, man. Or don't and be an asshole with frankly more unreasonable expectations than any of us on something that you contributed precisely dick to, but if so I daresay this might not be the last you'll be called out on it, if only from myself.

In other posts - I wonder why the didn't decide to do the two movies in one section and all the rest or 'legacy' in it's own section. R2 and Series and R3 and the rest just sounds funny, structure wise. But, their project, their layout I suppose.

Don't see how this is a bad thing? Unless I'm misinterpreting it.

I don't really have any interest in hearing the same old stories from the original film. But do have immense interest in hearing all about the sequels.

I will likely get RoboDoc1 at some point, but the 2nd release will be far more interesting to me. I'd rather this than hours of footage end up on the cutting room floor because they weren't able to fit it all onto one disc.

Saw the email some days ago; heard rumors on Facebook before. Almost crapped my pants.

Having an in-depth documentary about the character is one of the best things that happend to good old Robo, as Stan said. The chance to see some behind the scenes from the sequels is amazing, and having a lot of people involved on them is a plus. The only complaint for me is the lack of PD material. Yes, it seems they´re focusing on live action stuff; I understand a lot of people didn´t like it, but if they included The Series, I think they should do something with the latest RoboIncarnation before the reboot.

As for the comics, while I´m a comic book nerd it doesn´t bother me too much. I think they weren´t too many relevant histories behind the making of the comics, with the exception of Marvel having troubles with Orion by the time and Alan Grant quitting the job (something I covered on my magazine, by the way :b). Other than that, and maybe some technical stuff about how the comics were made or personal opinions by the people behind them, I don´t think there are a lot of stuff to put in there. Other than having a few covers and snapshots of videogames, toys and merch, can´t see a way to fit these products into the main documentary.

I think this is some very good news. I was worried with all these interviews that they'd had to cut so much content to get it at any reasonable length. This way we'll get an amazing amount of Robo content.

As for a documentary that focuses on the comics, I'm thinking that way be a good fan project.

Stan is right. This is no skin off my ass and I did not contribute dick to this project. I thank Stan for making the very valid response that I deserved to hear. But I stand by my original point about it being disrespectful to Robocop's legacy to have it stuffed into the Robocop 3 section, and if you really think this is the "arguably the best damn piece of Robo media since the original film" it seems you don't respect the legacy enough either. It might not be as much as some franchises, but you can't just take the Series or Robocop vs. Terminator for granted! For some people's favorite movies there is just a film. They can buy the poster, some magazine interviews, but that's about it. We get fresh new Robocop products every year like clockwork!

Of course the doc was never gonna focus on the outliers of the Robocop franchise. Maybe if the makers of the film had spent some time getting feedback from us here they could have sculpted it in a direction more appealing to the actual fanbase. But they didn't and went ahead making the movie they wanted to make. Nothing wrong with that, and as stated previously I didn't give them a dime to further their vision. And that is for this reason exactly, because it is their vision and not mine. I personally would skip right over the first movie, which has been talked about ad nauseam to the point of utter apathy on my part. I'd be more much interested to hear about the Series and PD, not to mention the comics, which have the best Robocop stories overall.

I am a fan of Robocop so I will continue voicing my opinion. This was a misstep. You are right that no one is forcing us to eat it, but I do feel like we are getting shit for dinner and I can't just grin and bear it. Someone is finally talking about Robocop so I should just shut up and listen, right? Maybe, but I'd rather have my standpoint clearly on the record for those who might try to do a better job in the future. The filmmakers should not have ignore Robocop's legacy, nor should Robofans take it for granted. IF the movies were all that mattered we'd be discussing them on IMDB, not a dedicated Robocop forum.

And you guys want some Robocop 2 trivia? Well this is not really Robocop related, but my friend's suite-mate in college is the son of Tom Noonan, and I have learned some juicy tidbits. Aside from feeling intense remorse for having played five different pedophiles on film, Tom Noonan also allegedly sits around the house smoking weed in an extremely oversized t-shirt and whimsical hat on a regular basis. Put that in your precious Robodoc!

Products, yes. Most of them figures and toys and - while I'm not unhappy about them, some are fantastic - most of 'em are just as rehashed as all the info and trivia about R1. They're not really anything 'new' or different. Which was my point. This is something different. Much of it isn't, but much of it is - new talks with previously un-interviewed folks. New materials that haven't been revealed prior. This is the first taste of something different for Robo in terms of moving media post-reboot and post-PD. And in terms of video to be viewed, I do think it'll be one of the best things there since the original film. Yes I'm thinking more on visual media, tv/film/etc. Does that mean I'm discounting everything else Robo? Hardly. Perhaps I'm not as into some parts of the 'legacy' - but that's allowed. If that means I lack 'respect', makes me less a fan to you then A) that's certainly your opinion you're free to have and B) get bent. I'm not any worse a fan for not being as into one aspect or other of the franchise, you're not any better for being moreso into one aspect or the other. I don't care for pissing contests.

Maybe if the makers of the film had spent some time getting feedback from us here they could have sculpted it in a direction more appealing to the actual fanbase.

On this I think you do make a valid point. I wish they might have visited RA, mentioned something about this on here beforehand and gotten a 'pulse' if you will of what most of us would have wanted to check out most. Perhaps they lurked on here without ever signing up, it's possible, I hope so, but I doubt it. And this here I could see a sense of 'disrespect' perhaps, though again I don't take it nearly that far.

Trust me I like the rest of us will be delighting mainly in everything outside of R1. We agree it's been pretty much as milked as it can be. That said, as Chanood noted and I agree there really isn't too much to explore on the comics or games on a reflective and trivia level, this even before you get into whether those involved are willing or able at this point anyway. I'm astounded by what these guys have managed to chalk up as it is. Anyway, while they haven't presented themselves on here I feel they are going on a decent baseline level for everything. And on that baseline level, comics are, as you yourself said Pimp, an outlier. Less focus will be there. Do I think it's right not really but that's how it is. With that, you may disagree but I don't believe they're delivering a mostly wasted product by any means. Especially with it being split up and focused slightly more as it is and keeping all the material they've amassed intact.

Bottom line if you aren't satisfied and feel this isn't worth your money that's fine but much of the rest of it still sounds more like spoiled brat whining rather than expressing a legitimate grievance to me. Which you're free to do as far as I'm concerned but again perhaps not without objection. Once more, maybe slow your roll, if only 'cause you've made your feelings quite clear by this point.

Odd to bundle "The Series" with R2, even if Ed & Mike wrote the pilot. Glad they're not covering PD. Would only like to hear what the writers thought of the piss-poor direction. Their script with the fat trimmed, in the hands of any of the '94 directors, and with Eden in the role, would've been something to behold.

Dear all,
Just a quick update - RoboDoc is now being edited. Due to the huge size of the doc we are looking at splitting it into x2 releases - RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop and RoboDoc 2 and RoboDoc 3: The Creation of RoboCop 2 and 3 (this will include the legacy and TV series)

The reason for this is the sheer volume of the doc - with now over 90 interviews and our recent acquirement of over 4 hours of BTS from Robo2 and 2 hours of BTS from Robo3 it would be short-changing you to release a condensed version of the doc.
Please do not worry if the above does happen ALL those who pledged for the DVD/Blu will receive both copies.

Our estimated release is late 2017 and we may have previews in the Summer. For those of you who enjoyed our Fright Night Doc, you know that quality is worth the wait.
Many thanks

They hastily wrote off the comics to say they thought Terminator was tougher than Robocop. They should have made a documentary about Terminator instead. Throughout the interview they kept referencing the other, similar documentaries they have made. So clearly Robocop was not first, second, or even third choice, not a favorite film of any of the people documenting it. Kinda sad but I guess that's always how it goes. Documentarians make documentaries, not fans. But still, couldn't even make the link that Frank Miller wrote Robocop 2, something they are willing to spend way more time talking about than RvT, so maybe his ideas in the comics are somewhat relevant. Instead of putting down the dude they are supposed to be making a passionate project about. I don't give a hoot what metric you use to judge the battle, if you are making a documentary about Robocop and someone interviews you about it don't say that Robocop is gonna lose to his archenemy! That's like opening an IHOP and then going around saying you prefer waffles...

Sadly I have to agree, they lost a couple points there. Then again I've heard a die-hard fan or two say the same about out hero not being on top in that contest too, so, bah.. Eh, like I said, nobody's perfect.

That said, I don't agree they aren't fans of Robo though. They're aren't on our level that's for sure but they chose it to do despite the fact they've previously focused on horror pieces with far less of an encompassing 'franchise' to them (a point of which was made about how daunting this was by comparison) I think that still says something.

Deadlines have been missed and in hindsight they were unrealistic for a project involving 3 films, a TV series and over 100 interviews. We can apologise for this as it was our error!

Some may see this as an excuse BUT it is a genuine mammoth project. We have other teams working on Pennywise so there is no crossover work and our editors can give their all on RoboDoc.

There is really no rush to complete this, sure there are a few fans on the edge of their seat but it's not like Robo is gonna be any more or less relevant a year or two from now so I say they should take as long as they need to make a truly definitive Robo documentary. And hopefully that means they will find some time to squeeze in stuff about the comics, cartoons, and everything else besides the "3 films, a TV series".

Not sure about that. No effort to talk about PD for the moment, and it looks they won´t focus their attention on comics (some of us gave them contacts to people who worked on comics, but no news about some comic interviews from the special). They included "Our RoboCop Remake", but as far as I know, they only approached Reiko for that part, even when they had the mails from the people behind the project.

So I assume they wanted to focus the doc with Robo 1,2,3 and The Series.

They split the doc into Part 1 (RoboCop) and Part 2 (the rest). I´m not sure how they´ll manage to put the rest of the franchise in Part 2, but I assume they´ll focus on Robo 2 & 3, and then the rest (it seems they´ll talk about The Series, having actors from there, but I doubt they´ll go in deep on comics, games, PD and such).

Meh...they'll probably cover the reboot instead...

Not a fan of RebootCop, and I doubt they´ll take their time to cover it properly, but even with a dull movie like that it´d be interesting to hear Padilha or somewhere talking about it, specially if they´re honest and could explain their ideas and how the studios changed them.

I don´t remember (sent them a few messages when they announce the doc), but I´m sure I told them abut Lee Sullivan. Not sure about Alan Grant (could be; interviewed him in 2012). And I think I told them about Walt Simonson as well (Robo VS Terminator). I also send contacts to people on "Our RoboCop Remake", The Series and PD. Don´t know if they reached Reiko after they talked (if they did) with the maker of "Our RoboCop Remake", but they announce him as a part of the project. I also told them I could send the poster on a good resolution if they needed, but didn´t ask for it. So, I don´t know how they´ll deal with all these productions and how much time they´re going to spend talking about those.

They've said that there's a lot of work and it'll be delayed but I wonder if, due to the amount of work and content they have, if it might end up getting split into 3. Part 1 covering the first movie, Part 2 covering Robo 2 and 3 and then Part 3 covering everything else. It would certainly make sense and they can release them in stages instead of having to release them all at once so we aren't waiting potentially another year for the content, 2 years after it was due to be released.

I would love to see that Part 3. But for now it sounds like they need to get out the stuff they have ASAP. Then, if they want, they could focus on doing a Part 3 that does justice to the franchise and explores the topics in depth. Right now it seems they are only focused on the first three movies and the Series so that still leaves a lot of room to be explored. But delaying this project more and more is not gonna help.

Eh, not to be the cynic but I'm not so sure that stuff is even still around, myself, if it ever was. After all studios and productions throw away as much as they make thinking it worthless crap at the time and assuming that it would always be so. Really if there was a time for MGM to actually make use (translation: money) out of that stuff it would have been with the Shout Factory releases and/or the Doc.

In any event I agree we've gotten all we're gonna get out of the sequels and so forth and this will be something R1 related. I of course would love to see something more about the sequels or shows or any of the other secondary stuff but again, think we've gotten all we'll ever get. Basically it's a few short reels of alternate take footage from Robo1. Similar to the uncut footage found on the Robo1 special features.

It's that guy Julien Dumont that worked with Murphy38 on Robo vs Predator that had and sent the reels to the robodoc team. Muprhy38 had the reels originally.

Fair enough. Incidentally, the first film aired on its original UK network, ITV, for the first time last night in over 25 years. The opening 15 minutes before the initial commercial break had none of the swearing and Kinney's death reduced to a single shot. His lower back, when one of the blood bags appears briefly. Even then, I think they trimmed that.

The omissions of "fuck" and "fuckin'" made for some awkward edits. Was like the old TV cut. Awful.

I was generalising. ITV 4, ITV - same network. Won't be long before they schedule it again as filler on a Friday or Sat. night. The amount of times that I've seen "Red Heat" on there has been high. Then again, they played that to death on the 4th channel first. Guess it's a way of determining if a 30-year-old cult classic will draw a reasonable audience on premium airtime.

I didn't say it was 25 years "to the day", but with regards to what was cut from part 1, I noted that in the reply you acknowledged. When it returned for part 2, it was uncut. A strange MO. It was like anything that soon after the watershed was deemed inappropriate. Yet the nudity in the locker room with the white female officer was left in.

Only in the last 2 months have we been able to gain - 100s of never before seen photos - boxes of promotional materials and production documents - hours of rare and never before seen alternative takes of the filming of RoboCop - boxes of storyboards

It’s taken over a year to negotiate the licenses for the above materials and it’s well worth it.

Eastwood and Chris are now in the final stages of the edit and motion graphics. This is no ordinary doc - it is a complete scene by scene dissection of RoboCop with brand-new music and art especially produced for the doc. This doesn’t even touch the work that Chris is doing on RoboCop 2, 3, TV series, comic books and games. Much more than we originally set out to make and campaigned for!

They got some shit recently for posting a Kickstarter link for their latest project unfortunately; the one about Robert Englund. I can understand why, but it prompted them to admit that "RD" is in final post and nearing completion. If so, may mean a finished edit. Would be great to see this over the summer...just wish we were getting the sequel and series material as well.

Not to sound ungrateful, but I reckon what new information there is to digest will mostly be about the technical aspects of the production, such as the sound design, etc. There's only so many ways that a director can convey what they intended to accomplish. Weller had a point declining on those grounds.

I hope they´ll tell us something that would give us hope. I understand they have to keep going and make more stuff, but I can understand some fan´s frustration about not having a release date and little updates, while using the RoboDoc pages to promote their Police Academy or Englund´s docs.

Also, I´m not sure how they´ll release the stuff. I mean, they´re going to split it into two documentaries: one fully dedicated to the first film, and then a second doc to the rest of the franchise. If I paid for a Blu Ray copy of the documentary, way before it´d become two, will they send a physical copy of the first one and then they´ll send the second one once it´ll be finished?

It was a nightmare to watch it from Dread Central. It seems it didn´t work on cellphones, but it was awful to watch it on my computer.

Anyway, the clip was pretty good. I hope the "Coming Soon" is real and we´ll get it in the following months!

Never heard of Dread Central until the morning, but won't be going back there for anymore plays. Was absolutely terrible watching it on their site, seizing up every 2 minutes. The picture quality was soft and blurred, but still, was determined to see it through to the "bitter" (?) end. The team should've just uploaded it to their replacement TinyURL site. The quality is true HD with no playback glitches.

With the preview itself, it was rather good! The eerie, haunting music in parts was very effective, reminiscent of horror films of that era. The archive audio interviews with Peter were fresh and compelling to hear. Many insightful thoughts from him on Murphy's death & backstory, though contradictory to what appeared on-screen. The notes that he'd supposedly written in preparation for the role (did he contribute these instead of not appearing?) were equally intriguing, but some of those intentions weren't conveyed in his final performance.

Murphy had fired his gun before. He had multiple commendations and 12 years on the force. If the minute-long, original TV spot is anything to go by. Of course he was something of a "Dirty Harry" type, as Callahan himself was basically a gunslinger, dropped into an urban, decaying San Francisco. He wasn't of his time, but a distant, past time. Over the years, Peter, Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner have commented that "Robo" was, in many ways, the same. A principled, law-abiding loner rolling in to clean-up the town. Peter even incorporated the gun-twirling-into-the-holster routine (as part of the character).

There was an element of cynicism in Murphy and whether Peter wanted to play it that way or not, he was directed in the end to play it. The "dead or alive, you're comin' with me" quip is practically another way of saying "do you feel lucky 2nd "RoboDoc", but a third one as well.

Was that always the intention? I thought "RoboDoc 1.5" or "RoboDoc 2" (whatever they were calling it) would encompass everything, post-'87.

No, there will still be two parts. Robo1 this year and then the rest sometime next year.

However, the first part will from what i understand contain a shorter "legacy" section where they talk briefly about what came after Robo1.

I think it will. Towery did a lot on film #1. Learning the mime, standing-in for the major gags; dealing with the suit, heat, etc. (and working closely with Weller). I don't see how much Parker and the blonde rapist actor can add to the making of their scenes - given they're self-explanatory. Paul, Ed, Mike and Jost probably will have covered those amply.

Tyler was just there to service the story and wasn't a rounded character. Be great to hear her and the other fella, but this thing's going to be 6 hours long at this rate.

The first RoboDoc gonna be around 4 hours long.

RoboDoc 2 is coming in at around 90 minutes, as is RoboDoc 3. The guys have hours of behind the scenes footage from RoboCop 2 alone to put into RoboDoc 2.

I'm not sure though if the games, comics, PD, TV series, cartoon etc. are being included in the Docs that are for the films they relate to or if they are part of another 4th Doc or DVD/BR extras? Either way, it's going to be a LOT of content to watch.

As far as I know, no PD in the Doc (at least, zero people interviewed for it). Yes to The Series; but not sure how they´ll handle the cartoons (I bet they won´t spend too much time talking about these). As for the comics, they only interviewed Sullivan.

I drop them some names from PD and comics, but it seems they only went for Sullivan (I think I told them about Simonson as well, which he kindly answered my questions about Robo Vs Terminator for my magazine). As for PD, the director only watched the first minutes to "Dark Justice" and didn´t like it. Which is fair, but when you want to talk about "all things Robo" that should be included as well. As I said before, I don´t like RebootCop, but I´d really like to know what Padilha and Kinneman think about that film now they´re free from the studio.

I´d like to know more, specially from these productions that are kinda obscure, the one nobody talks about. I couldn´t reach the guy behind Fireworks for my magazine, but I think they would be able. Hell, with that dude alone you can cover both Alpha Commando and PD!

I couldn't agree more. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is NOT the comprehensive Robodoc it claims to be! How could it be when the director never even saw PD? Being an expert on a subject doesn't just mean knowing about the well loved parts, it means knowing the whole picture, warts and all! And don't get me wrong, I love Lee Sullivan, have had many enlightening chats with him, and proudly display several pieces of his Roboart on my walls! But there is much, much more to the story of RoboCop in the comics! It has been disappointing to me to watch the "Legacy" of RoboCop further and further squashed into the shadows... yeah, it's cool that they expanded each film to their own documentary. But that just means the most interesting parts are further and further away, if the "Legacy" documentary will even see the light of day! Sure, most people are fans of RoboCop, the 1987 film. But I am a fan of RoboCop, the character. RoboCop: The Series or the Marvel cartoon aren't just a footnote in the "Legacy" for me, they are a major part of the story! And I know everybody does not have to agree, obviously the producers of these 'comprehensive' documentaries don't agree! Or maybe I'm wrong, they sure have added many last minute changes to the forthcoming documentary so perhaps the Legacy will be expanded and developed into the full force feature it deserves to be down the line. But coming off the back of a RoboCop 3 documentary, I think the chance of it even seeing release is low. And I know I have been the voice of negativity in regards to this documentary, but if a RoboCop fan can't be outraged on a RoboCop message board, then what place is there for a fan of RoboCop in 2019???

Well, that happens over and over: I remember that Robo-special (I think it was made in the UK) issue from a magazine covering "EVERYTHING Robo", to find PD has a small picture and a little square with a few words about it :b Same with "The Definitive Story": That´s fine to talk about the first RoboCop (even when there´s hundreds of information on DVDs and such about it), and then the TV stuff had a brief section. PD has one page or two; same with Alpha Commando. I think they talked a lil bit more from The Series, but that´s all. Hell, I think I recall the Marvel RoboCop cartoon only had a mention somewhere! I have to check my copy, but I find it kinda frustrating. For the usual RoboFan they/we know a bunch on information about the first one; not so much about the things that came later.

Fun Fact: Do you know the Robo-flu in the Marvel cartoon was something Stan Lee added to the series? I know, since I interviewed people from that show :b If I could make it for a small magazine nobody knows, imagine being on a bigger, legit project like this. I think a lot of people would be happy to share their memories on these shows.

Don´t get me wrong, I think RoboDoc would be a thrill to watch, but I´m more interested on their work on Robo 2 & 3 and the "Legacy" aspects of it, since there´s little information about these ones. I wish they could add some people for these lesser known products.

We all know most Robo "fans" think everything but the first movie is pure garbage, so that is and always will be where the focus is for any kind of magazine article or video documentary. Unfortunate, but hardly surprising.

The TV shows and cartoons are so low on the interest list for most that I'm happy whenever it is even mentioned. That RoboDoc will actually do a short documentary on the series is an absolute miracle seeing as it started out as a doc for the first movie first and foremost.

There is also a conflict between people that are pissed that RoboDoc isn't released NOW and people that are pissed that they don't include even more into an already delayed piece.

I know, since I interviewed people from that show
Still waiting to read all those interviews in English. :)

Same here. Don't get me wrong I'd like to have more - much more - on the other media, especially the comics (particularly the Dark Horse run) and the '94 Series. But that being said I find it hard to be disappointed when this indeed started just being about the first flick. My thought back then was maybe it'd include some decent lip-service - perhaps a tad more - for everything else. That it has ballooned up to what it is now I consider a blessing. It's also why I ain't sweating it taking so long - The more time they take the better - and hopefully more inclusive - it can be.

Yes of course I would like more, want more. And do think we deserve more, as those that have 'kept the faith' all these years. Yet at this point we've have gotten more out of the shadows and periphery of Robo than any other time in the past three decades so, I just find it difficult to complain myself. Even when there's some merit to it (I endured watching PD, but they can't? Bah! :b ). That and as time's gone on I feel - and have accepted - that we may never get enough no matter what. We've been spoiled as fuck from the get-go by getting the absolute most perfect film ever to grace any screen. Once you've gotten perfection, well what else is there? :robo2:

So, what are they saying? All 3 docs will be released as a boxset? They say "the package", so that suggests the lot. They talk about the sequel edits, which feels like a reason why the the first film's is not out yet.

Looking like they won't be turning out that first one before the year's out, anyway. It's the 30th anniversary of "RoboCop 2" next year, as well. Could be that they're aiming to hit that...as a 'middle' kind of birthday of the trilogy.

Almost as awkward as showing only 35 minutes of a documentary that was supposed to be finished and released over two years ago! And while it would be cool if Weller did decide to get involved in it after seeing the snippet then it would probably add another two years onto production. Seems like another sloppy choice which is par for the course on this documentary. Sure, it is obvious why you would have Weller there, since he did play the character the entire documentary focuses around, but I can't help but feel it is just gonna make his absence more noticeable and leave a lot of people feeling burned.

If Weller *was* to participate, it shouldn't add another 2 years. They'd get what they need from him that hasn't been covered before. Somebody needs to get him on-camera about "RoboCop 2" and even "3". What went down on the former and what he thinks of the latter. If they can swing it, select scenes from "The Series". Exploring Murphy's humanity, etc.

It'd give him an idea of what *could've* been done for him on film #2 and he's worked with Kim Coates ("Malloy" in 'THE TIN MAN'). Probably get a kick out of him playing Murphy's former partner. He'd also bust the balls, given how hilarious Coates is in the first 3 acts of the ep (unintentionally).

Has anyone actually listened to the audio commentaries that the ROBODOC guys did for the sequels? Do they offer any new information from cast or crew they interviewed?

The RoboDoc crew attended the 'For the Love of Sci-Fi' convention this weekend to showcase a 20 minute preview of our documentary.

Unfortunately Dr. Weller’s requested appearance fee is more than we can afford with our independent production. We’re still in communication with him and he has once again wished us luck with the doc.

The documentary is supported with over 100 interviews from the original cast and crew of the original Orion Pictures Trilogy, the Canadian TV Series, comic books and video games. PROJECT STATUS UPDATE (Dec, 2019) RELEASE DATE: TBD There is no release date at this time. The project has grown significantly since we first started and we want to give the RoboCop series the proper treatment it deserves. Not only that, but we'll also be covering the making of RoboCop 3 in an extensive standalone feature as well. Complete with exclusive first-time interviews from the movie’s cast and crew including Mr RoboCop himself RJB (such a cool cat)
⠀
Thanks to all of you for your constant support and patience. We’re continuing to work our asses off behind the scenes to bring you what promises to be the ultimate RoboCop bible. With a team of just two people handling the entire post-production process, it’s a huge feat. Especially with full-time jobs. This is bad news to me. The first film is the part I was least interested in, now we will probably have to wait several more years to see the followups about RoboCop 2 and 3. I saw something on facebook about how they got the RoboCop 2 graveyard scene. You would think they would want to share that with the community, not hold it back further. Additionally, the one part of this documentary that I cared about most seems to be nowhere to be found, the 'legacy' part. I wonder if the interview with lee Sullivan will make the cut of any of these documentaries, or will that all just be thrown aside? I know I may be the most vocal opponent of this documentary, but the way they have been handling it has been a joke.

I guess it´d be something like RoboDoc 1, RoboDoc2 and RoboDoc 3 (plus legacy). I can picture a 30 minutes run with a bunch of "cameos" from post RoboCop 3 saying a few words. Anyway, if they´ll cover the cartoons, it won´t be with the people who made them, and zero people from PD so far as well. Lee Sullivan worked between movies, so they could put in on RoboDoc1 or 2 talking about the films. But I´m afraid they´ll do what every other Robospecial did on magazines and such: talking too much about the first one, where we almost know the kind of shorts Weller used while filming, then the sequels (which to us sounds interesting, having so little information about 2 & 3), and then, maybe, some spot for The Series. Then put everything else on a rushed, boring and non-informative mix.

Take the SFX Special: PD has a little square on a TV segment. One still, a vague description. On "The Definitive Story" there´s plenty of pages to talk about The Series; PD has one page, and Alpha Commando has the same treatment. Even there isn´t a single section from the Marvel Cartoon, which is mentioned on a segment.

And zero interviews with people from RebootCop. I don´t like the movie, but man, I´d love to hear Padilha taking shit about how crappy the filming was and how difficult was to deal with the studio. Not sure if that´d happen, since the RoboDoc team had to deal with studios to make this, but we could dream. At least some words from people from the Reboot trying to justify the film or saying anything about how it didn´t turn ok (hell, yesterday I was re-watching some stuff from Future Shocks and Alex Garland addressed how "Dredd" didn´t turn well).

I don´t want to sound like an ungrateful fan. I can´t wait to get the docs at home, but when you´re saying it´ll be "The Definitive" when you´re omitting the parts of the franchise you don´t like, you´re not doing something that covers everything. I already put this example before: is like you´re working on a cinematic Batman doc but you don´t talk about the Schumacher films because "they´re bad". And specially because they´re bad I want to know what the makers were thinking back then :b

So according to the video above, RoboDoc 1 is around 4 hours, RoboDoc 2 is around 2.5 hours and RoboDoc 3 is around 2 hours and then there are features that covers the series, games, comics and other non-film specific content, but where they appear and how they fit in with everything wasn't made fully clear. It is appearing that it's gonna be around 10+ hours in total for everything.

I think they´d put these as "extras". On some documentaries they put uncut or extended interviews or topics that doesn´t make the cut in the official doc. So I can see a "Bonus feature" section on RoboDoc 3 to talk about what happened after the third film, and the other stuff between films. Anyway, I still think their main goal is to cover the films, and then drop a bunch of trivia about TV, games, and comics and make a shorter "legacy" section.

Remember, they have to talk about the Canadian TV show (I´d say shows, but little effort was made to reach anyone from PD, as I gave them some mails and apparently the people from the show didn´t get anything from them), the cartoons, comics (gave them other names as well, but only Sullivan was included so far), videogames PLUS include the material fans provided (they asked for fan art, pictures from their collections, etc) to fill the "Legacy" section, which, as far as I know, won´t have it´s own documentary.

I have to agree basically 100% with everything you said here. For example, I don't love the reboot, but don't think it should be forgotten when talking about the history of RoboCop either. I too would love to see Padilha open up about his experiences making it, and I think in the context of a larger film about RoboCop as a whole it could highlight why Robo was such a compelling character worth revisiting all those years later. But alas, we won't have that chance, it would seem.

Part of the problem with having fans make a documentary, rather than an objective film crew, is their fan prejudices will bleed through. We can already tell they love the first movie much more than the sequels. And that's fine, but I would rather see filmmakers that treat each part of the puzzle with equal curiosity and attention. But instead I feel the tone of the docs will be "Robo 1 is a masterpiece, Robo 2 wasn't so bad, and Robo 3 was a big mess lol" as has been the kind of standard fan position for years. But not this fan.

RoboCop didn't end with the third movie, and my interest in the character goes far beyond the movies. Quite frankly, I don't really care about the original movie anymore, there are no mysteries to uncover and nothing I'm dying to know. But the same can't be said for the rest, just the doc crew's announcement that they had some behind the scenes footage of the Robo 2 graveyard scene got me super excited, but also frustrated that it will be such a long wait to get there.

I understand that everyone doesn't love the Dark Horse RoboCop comics as much as me. But I think a lot of fans don't even know they exist, and this would be a perfect chance to give them the love they deserve. I can't say I'm too excited to watch 4 hours of material on the first film. But I would absolutely watch a 4 hour doc about the Dark Horse comics, or all the comics. I'd even rather watch a 4 hour doc about PD, and I think that would be genuinely fascinating. Again, I should not look a gift horse in the mouth, but I just can't help but have that feeling that these documentaries are far from 'definitive' when they overlooking some of my favorites parts of RoboCop's history. Because they aren't just forgettable parts of the 'legacy' to me, they are important to me and large parts of the reason that RoboCop is my favorite character.

They don't have the actual deleted scene. It's the same footage that can also be found on the scream factory edition. Behind the scenes footage shot by Paul Sammon.

That´s the big problem with RoboCop as a franchise: everything after the first movie was considered "crap". I meant, how many releases from the first film we have in the last 20 years? And then compare the releases we had for the rest of the series: R2 & R3 had a crappy release on DVD as part of the Trilogy, with only the trailer as an extra. The upgrades they had are based on the same DVD releases: barebone editions without extras. Only Scream Factory released (only for the US) the sequels with some effort to make a "collector´s edition". The series were released on DVD, and then on Blu Ray on Germany on a suspicious way. Standard definition, a featurette stolen from this site, and a weird selection of the Japanese ads where Robo´s selling noodles. I´m surprised the Marvel Cartoon was released here in Europe on four DVDs, and PD has multiple editions along the years, but sadly, most of them without any extras. Alpha Commando didn´t have any releases on digital, and I´m not sure if it was released on VHS in the past. RebootCop was released on a standard Blu Ray with a few short extras, and then it was released on some "combos" with the first film or the trilogy.

When you ask companies about a decent release of the rest of the franchise, they usually don´t say "No", but their replies are so vague that you could read between lines.

A 4 hour documentary about RoboCop sounds "boring" to me. Dissecting each scene would make it hard to swallow, but they´re trying their best to make the editing look fun and appealling. I´m sure any new behind the scenes stuff would be amazing to watch, but we had a bunch of good looking, great featurettes about the first RoboCop in the past.

As for Robo 2 & 3, I bet it´ll be fun to watch behind the scenes, deleted scene recreations and thoughts from the cast and crew, since we had tons of crappy releases from the films in the past. But to tell you the truth, I´d be more interested on having behind the scenes stuff from The Series, since there´s little information about the making of the show. We had some interviews with Eden and crew on specials and the book, and the VHS featurettes that this site put online, but they´re short. If someone would get access to more stuff from the TV era, the RoboDoc crew would make it possible. You can imagine having some reels from The Series or PD there; some storyboards and cells from the Cartoons, and such.

And I know most of these people from the TV adaptations would be happy to talk about these projects. Same with the comics. I understand Miller would be hard to track (but with Ed Neumeier on board and the rest of the people who created this character supporting the documentary I think Miller would even think about getting on board), but there are many artists and writers who you could approach. Take Alan Grant, for example. He´d be AMAZING to hear him talk in depth about his work on the comics. He loved the character, and he hated working on it due to studio interferences. He´s a Brit, so they could handle having some hours with him to talk about him. If a dude from Spain could get a written interview from him, he could contribute to this.

Kurkut Öztekin is a lovely guy; met him on a Comic Convention here and had the chance to interview him. Quite sincere about their opinion on the original script from RoboCop 3. He likes RoboCain. He isn´t too harsh on RebootCop, but understands why it doesn´t have too many fans. I meant, I´m sure he´d like to give the people behind the Doc is thoughts. Even Walter Simonson, the guy behind Robo Vs. The Terminator, is a lovely guy who can answer some questions. A legend on his own, he told me about how he could get the look of the characters buying some kits (something Sullivan did as well) and shared his thoughts about the character.

I can see they want to focus the interviews on live action, but then they include on their promotional images some stuff from videogames, comics and such. It´d be impossible to get everyone on board, but I´m sure they could arrange some interviews with people who would represent these RoboRelated stuff they forgot. I mean, you can get Tom Noonan or Robert Burke and you can´t reach Julian Grant or the guy who runs Fireworks to talk about Alpha Commando or PD? You only could interview Lee Sullivan (great bloke as well) but can´t interview others, even when people gave you some contacts to reach them?

At this point, we could talk about whatever we´d want, but I doubt we´d get anyone outside the films for the documentaries.

I'm fairly certain the first few episodes where available on VHS and the show was available on an online streaming platform (Hulu, I believe) a couple of years ago.

There was an Alpha Commando VHS release, but it seems there was only one which collects the first three episodes which were one story arc. I've seen this floating around on eBay and stuff for years but no others were released to my knowledge. It also used a weird image of Robo on the cover which is not nearly as blue as he appears in the actual cartoon. Want to know more about this VHS or Alpha Commando in general? Then don't watch the upcoming 'definitive' RoboDocs. Sorry, couldn't resist...

Think we now know why Weller was reluctant to participate in this. The response to his "call me Robo" on-set demand by the cast & crew. Kurtwood Smith and Randy Moore really throw him under the bus here, but fair play to them for conveying how they still feel 30 years on.

And yet, after listening to the RoboVision and Sound Design portions of the segment (which were interesting and nicely explained), the awkwardness between Peter and those 2 guys was the most compelling part. It tells a story of a certain amount of conflict with some 'dramatic' value.

It's been edited to depict PW as an arrogant, pretentious actor with a method technique ego. That doesn't go down too well with your normal, relaxed, down-to-earth people on a film crew. They could care less and will truly "social distance".

I´ve seen the extras a bunch of times and the way they edited the Bob Morton press conference saying if he´s there or listening to this on this makes the "silly" and "fun" promo scene a more interesting take. Not sure if the real deal involved the rest of the cast being tired to his methods to the point of thinking he was arrogant or an asshole (it seemed most of the cast had respect for Weller), and I don´t know if people would see the funny edits in here as a way to getting a "vengance" over the fact he doesn´t want to be involved on this.

Well, yeah, there is the bootleg release, but that's pretty much it. I recorded the entire show about a decade ago when it first aired here, but it's dubbed in Bulgarian. There are encodes from Hulu floating around the net though (since I believe the show's not on there anymore). In fact over Ł60k more.
It is evident from the commitment and enthusiasm shown by our directors that this project is a labour of love and is going to be amazing!
We ask again for your patience and support. Criticism and concern is one thing BUT abuse and outright defamation will be deleted and those behind it will be banned from our page.

I wonder if "In Search Of Tomorrow" have anything to do with this, perhaps moneywise? Anyway, it´s nice to see Weller on this. A little bit too much goofy on these edits, but great to see the man on this.

Yes. They claimed they´re on the last steps of post-production, so I wonder how Weller´s stuff would fit on the (almost) finished documentary/ies. Re-edits or having a special segment as a bonus for him, like an "exclusive interview with Weller".

I think it might work better as a special segment of its own, or if not entirely standalone more of a contained segment. If could be cool if they save it for the end, so you have heard everybody talking about Robo and then you are rewarded with the man himself. They could still splice relevant movie clips into his interview, but at this point in production that is probably a better approach than stuffing his answers into the movie as it already exists. Either way, this is a great addition to the film and justifies the wait to get it in there. I was honestly always more interested in the lesser know cast and crew members. We have heard Weller talk about RoboCop a lot, so I personally did not think it was essential.... however, to be a truly definitive RoboCop documentary it simply would not be complete without Weller. This would be be a fitting place for him to deliver his true last words on RoboCop.

I agree with you, Pimp. Plus, if they want to release it before we all die, and avoid more delays, I think having a bonus segment on Weller alone would be cool. Plus, as you say, editing could make it more appealing than seeing him sitting and giving some trivia. I hope we´ll have the finished product this year, it´d be cool to finally add it to the RoboCollection.

I could care less about what he has to say now. He's milked the franchise for all its worth. He added to the ridicule of it with the KFC ads and doesn't care about it. He should've given the "RoboDoc" guys the interview when they actually started, rather than holding back and them in turn.

I was quite happy to watch it without him. The archive recordings they had were enough. They were interesting, insightful and lent the project his presence. Made him seem more mysterious and folklore, in a way, "like a cowboy".

I've only wanted to hear about the sequels and TV series. The stories about the first are nothing new. More technical and superfluous than anything; let's see the good people who worked beyond that. They were and are as important as Weller. His arrogance has delayed release further. But with a major distributor onboard, the team will be feeling the pressure to deliver by Christmas. If they don't, they run the risk of losing out on the momentum of this announcement.

Sadly the TV stuff is quite ignored, with the exception of "The Series", so I´m afraid little info will get on the animated stuff (PD is out the documentary on purpose).

I hope it´s true, it´s been a while since it was announced to be released in 2017

I think that the end Weller segment would be cool. I think he'd love getting to have his say on the topic one-on-one (even if its all been said before). It seems like he has warmed up to the idea of RoboCop stuff lately. As much as I like his work in RoboCop and in other movies, I get the impression that he values other things at this point in his life. Don't get me wrong, being known for as RoboCop in spite of all his acting roles must get annoying after a while. Imagine all the work you have done towards something and every time you go out there's some nerd like me asking him to say, "Dead or Alive, you're coming with me!" He was a serious artist and some of his other roles were gritty and interesting, but he only seems to get the nod for RoboCop from 90% of movie fans. Based on this assumption, it doesn't surprise me that he continued his education and became a PHD and got involved in another career based on something that he loved. It may have given him more purpose to do so than to go on the Convention circuit for the rest of his life talking about RoboCop. I have also heard other artists and voice actors (who are older) also react in this way when fans want to talk to them. It seems like they have a hard time understanding why we like this stuff as much as we do, or maybe even more than they did. For many of these actors, doing the voice of a cartoon character was a way to earn a living. The idea that it would lead to interviews, dvd special features and documentaries 30 to 40 years later, is not something that they probably expect.
Anyway, his contribution to the role, to science fiction genre movies, and to the world of character acting, is undeniable. Whether he has the desire to participate in documentaries is up to him, but as a fan, I appreciate what he, and all these actors, do for the fans. I love hearing them talk about RoboCop, and even if the stories don't change, I like getting that inside information from the people who were there. Bravo to the RoboDoc filmmakers and big thanks to all that participated.

I know. It's "The Series" I'm referring to.

Didn't care for the animated run and "PD" came along some years later. I get why they left it out, focusing more on the popularity 'boom' of the character (in the early/mid 90's), but I too would've liked to have seen, at the very least, Julian Grant, the writers and the 4 other producers.

Unless they didn't want to be featured...?

Maybe too embarrassed by the end product?

The problem with Weller is that, because of his style of acting and that eccentric, otherworldly voice of his, he kind of falls in-between the columns of method/character actors and stars, which is obvious he wanted to be; a 'gritty', grimy combination of both and thought of himself as such for a period of time. That, in a way, he was perhaps better than most star performers back then and had the personality traits, plus acumen, to prove it.

But with him coming from the New York acting community, which has always been predominantly theatre-based (Broadway, off-Broadway), his performances in the likes of "Shakedown", "Rainbow Drive" and "Fifty/Fifty" were either too broad and 'big' or too stiff and 'phoned-in'. He never could quite strike a balance between the two and that hindered him in not being recognised.

I'll be honest (it may insult the man if he ever reads this), but watching him in those films, I keep imagining Michael Douglas in those lead roles instead of him. Douglas had the charisma and wider appeal, which Weller, sadly, did not. Weller was damn near-perfect as RoboCop/Alex Murphy, but in other roles, I think even he struggled to break away from that part internally as an actor. He tried too hard to be a cool, suave detective, soldier and lawyer; and came of as more cocky, arrogant, which didn't suit him. It somehow resulted in dull performances. His work felt forced and too often lazy, which is why he'll always be remembered as "a robot".

At least with "RC", he could get away with being stiff, constrained and artificial. He was playing a quadriplegic with limbs that weren't his. He could imbue a certain amount of humanity and fluidity into the movements and facial expressions, but he was, at the end of the day, a robotic, mechanised figure; restricted by the limitations of such tech.

No, they didn´t ask them in the first place. I even gave them some contacts.

I love all things Robo, but I´m specially interested on these productions that didn´t have a lot of info available. I´m more interested on the RoboDoc segments after the first film. I´m sure the guys have found interesting stuff for the first film, no doubt, but there isn´t too many info about R2 and R3 (at least in Europe, where each release of these films came without any bonus content). And we had less information about the TV incarnations. So having a segment dedicated to the 94 series will be great.

Ya know this is making me think that maybe the Robodoc team should start releasing some of that 'legacy' content out of order. The Robodoc has been delayed for years, and now obviously is going to take a lot longer to finish up while they get Weller's interview incorporated. Maybe now would be the time to release the standalone minidoc about the Series? After all, it's not like there is some last minute footage that would drastically change that documentary. And it would be a nice way to finally give the kickstarted backers some small crumb of what they financially supported. But based on their track history, the team is not too concerned about satisfying their kickstarter backers. It is a shame that Weller's interview will push back the theoretically complete documentaries that we care about the most. Maybe they will release all of the documentaries at once, that would probably the fairest and most satisfying way to finally get this stuff out to the people. But if they stick with their current pace, I wonder if I will even be around to see the Series minidoc and other legacy stuff I have been most interested in the whole time. I am almost 30...

I´ll be 40 in some years, and I have a shitty health. I´ll loose my sight before it´ll be released.

A dude I know he´s working on a RoboBook here (which is weird, as I thought I was the only RoboFan in the country) and I ever help him a little with some people. The people from some of the TV shows gave him some juicy stuff, and I hope he´ll share that on the book. Guides and such for Alpha Commando and all that. And I´m not a good AC fan, but man, watching some behind the scenes stuff from that would be a treat.

Oh, well. Guess their interests are elsewhere. You never know with these guys and they might have a re-think some day in the future. They could end up in Toronto again or across Canada (if Julian and co. are spread out) and squeeze them in, while filming for another unrelated doc. They did that with "Pennywise"; that's how they got Blu Mankuma and James Kidnie (Sergeant Parks & Pudface Morgan).

They've clearly got plans to make a career out of these and it would seem more about American productions. They're probably talking about what they're going to do next, now that they've got a heavyweight distributor behind them. Red Rock Entertainment are one of the top independent companies in the UK. They seem impressed with the approach they've taken on this.

Try importing the Scream Factory releases of the Robo sequels, Chanood. Got around to watching their docs last year. They were good. Enough to go back to for repeated viewing. Some here thought that they were slapped together, but they were fine for what they were, even if the editing was slightly rough in parts. Think they were probably short on time and had to do a rush job on final changes.

Your typical DVD/BluRay extras, but not concerning themselves with clips from the films. Scenes and shots that we're already too familiar, they focused on the interviews and let them do the talking, lol. Sometimes, that's better. You want to HEAR from the people and what THEY have to say.

Why on earth would they want to do that...

The whole thing rests on the cult of "R1".

That's the classic. The rest are minor. We like them, but most don't.

The masses don't care and that's the way it is. The guys haven't got a major distributor onboard, just to start throwing out whole segments. They've signed agreements and contracts for global release.

That's what's happened here. That's how the business works. It's gone far beyond a Kickstarter venture. It got them where they wanted, but they also invested their own dollar. More than what was raised, I think; not just physically either. Time and effort, night-and-day...for however many years this has been running.

That's usually forgotten about by most "fans" of these things. Tends to show their own ignorance up. That little personality trait called "ego".

Only a minority are bothered about them not updating their fund page. They're on FB, Twitter and that's enough. Those are their platforms; where we can reach them. Their consumer base and most purists are across them. No one's going to KS to check for news. It's irrelevant at this stage.

Maybe they will release all of the documentaries at once, that would probably the fairest and most satisfying way to finally get this stuff out to the people. They've already said that they will.

You and Chanood keep making cracks at not being alive when they do. Let's see you take a crack at it.

You must be still butthurt about them not covering your precious comics, Pimpy. You've criticised them at every turn and just been a bitch. You don't hide it well, boy. Not even 30? Makes sense.

I understand, yes. But that´s something I saw on other properties as well. I lend a hand on a well known property, and when they put something from the "classic" one, people react happily. When they put something new, or something obscure, they almost have zero reactions. Which I find weird, as I thought fans would like to know more something about things that aren´t covered yet. I guess it has to do with comfort and familiarity.

As for R1, a lot of releases had great, in dept documentaries, that´s why I´m always interested to learn more about what came after. As we already talked in this forum, I´d like to see a segment about RebootCop with the makers talking (honestly) about the project. And I don´t like that film...

I´d like to, as well with some other titles from Scream Factory. I had the chance to watch a few from R2 and R3, which were posted online for a short time. Good stuff. But I´d have to get a multi-region player first to be able to watch them.

Peace, man! It´s been a while since the doc would be released, so I think it´s ok to have a laugh about the delays. To me, making a joke about delays it´s a way to fight the urge to watch these. I remember when "RoboCop Returns" was a "real" project; the director of this documentary post the news on social media, and I replied something like "Great, RoboDoc is delayed... again". Both had a good laugh, that´s all.

It´s not a bad idea. I even thought of making an edit of the Galyn Görg interview and make a video out of it, since I have the audio somewhere. Damn. They're getting some serious shit off some of the people who've been following this since the Kickstarter. That's a shame. They don't really deserve it. It's not easy making a documentary like this, but to be fair, they have been working on other projects. Had a feeling they'd get a bit of crap. I just want to hear about the sequels, series and comics. The previews that were around on the first film were good, but I'm looking forward more to them.

4 and a quarter hours is a monster length of time for one movie. Does every scene need to be covered? I thought they already had a distributor signed up. I'd love to have this by Christmas, but with the rest of the franchise included. Bugging that Frank Miller, Walon Green, Tim Hunter and the editors didn't want to participate or weren't approached to be interviewed. I can't imagine the guys didn't at least try with those people, but it suggests not all of the real story behind ROBOCOP 2 will be unearthed in that doc.

Me too. I´m more interested on the lesser known/beloved parts of the franchise, because they usually aren´t covered a lot. Even the people behind the distribution usually don´t give a shit about these parts of the property!

4 and a quarter hours is a monster length of time for one movie. Does every scene need to be covered?

Yes, that´s something that scares me. I mean, 4 hours sounds RoboHeaven, but you have to rely on fancy edits to make something that deep not boring. As we talked in this topic before, we already know a bunch of trivia about the first film, so we´ll have a bunch of the documentary with info we knew. I guess new footage would be a crucial part to keep us enjoying the same information again. But I´m curious how it´ll turn out.

Anyone remembers how they´ll ship the thing? Didn´t one of the updates hint that we´ll get RoboDoc 1 shipped and then the rest on a "near future"? And yup, having Miller to talk about R2 & 3 would be great. Sadly, I´m not sure he wants to talk about these...

Finally after years of hard work and patience, RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboDoc is to be released through @screamboxtv followed by a physical Blu-Ray release.

We know how long you have all waited and we have always appreciated your support and patience with us. We never thought it possible to release RoboDoc Part 1 as a 4-part limited series! 4 parts just on the first movie. RoboDoc will be the FIRST ever scene-by-scene analysis of a movie and is set to breathe fresh air in the long-standing documentary format.

We will be able to share more information soon, but an important thing to note is that for those who supported the project by pledging for a physical release, they will not only receive the 4-part limited series on blu-ray, they will also receive Part 2 and Part 3 upon release.

Please try and refrain from sending comments and DMs asking questions as we are working closely with Screambox to get the best release possible and will share updates when we can.
Finally, myself, our Directors Chris and Eastwood and our Producers Adam, Mikey, Laurence and Hank are super excited and proud to finally release RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboDoc.

Do you think it´ll be available in 2023? At this point, I´m not sure. And I´m used to wait at this point.

I´m not sure if I understood the whole situation. They´re working on the streaming plus the physical release, and if you pledged for the Blu Ray, they´re going to send you the Robo1 Doc, then the rest of the trilogy. I´m not sure if that would be viable, since you´ll have to send stuff twice (or more, we don´t know the details). I´d wait to get everything done, and I think it´d be cute to send first the Blu Rays to the people that paid for it before they stream it, because we´d get spoilers everywhere.

As I said before, if they´re with the legal stuff and distribution we could wait even more. I pledged to an indie flick some years ago (almost at the same time of RoboDoc) and I still have to get my copy in Blu Ray. Funny thing, a bunch of distributors all over the World already released the movie, yet the people who put money have to wait for the one from the makers of the film. I´m not angry for that, but in both cases I think they didn´t plan what could happen. Things went big and didn´t expect that, delaying the whole thing over and over.

The main problem for me is the lack of updates. I understand things could be slow during the process, but being silent for months while other of their (more recent) projects got a bunch of updates would feel weird for some of the contributors of RoboDoc. A mere "we´re still working on the Blu Ray" and an approximate date would calm these. I´ve seen posts with hostile comments from backers, and other posts had comments shut down.

Last update was in December. It´s been a while.

I think really the backers would be the ones who have the right to be upset. They paid to have this produced and now their getting the "check's in the mail" treatment. When they have all these other projects in the works as well it doesn't look good. Hopefully they aren't using the Canon Films playbook and "robbing Peter to pay Paul" with their projects. That never works. Just look at ANOVOS costume company...

As a backer himself what it kinda bothers me is they´re aiming for a streaming release first, which would be difficult to avoid spoilers or leaks while waiting for the Blu Rays. It happened with another project I already mentioned here: a friend just told me that film is in Prime, and I´m still waiting for my copy to come home. In that case I´m not worried since I doubt it´ll leak, it´s a small project, but I find ironic the people who contributed to it have to wait more for it. I said it before in this topic, I think they didn´t know how to react when things got bigger, and I think RoboDoc became bigger than they thought as well, so the last stages are taking forever (legal stuff, the incorporation of Weller to the doc, and distribution). Anyway, I think they should keep the people posted. I check my mails and the last one from them is from 2019 (I could have delete some of the recent ones, can´t remember, but we haven´t got any updates in this year).

The last update we had in social media involved the streaming of RoboDoc ("1", I think) with a release date on spring 2023.

Any day now lol. Really hope this doesn't slip till Christmas or 2024. Anyway to add to this topic, I met Peter Weller about 2 weeks ago, he signed my screener copy and I got a picture with him. I had him sign "I'd buy that for a dollar!" , he was like "Uhh that's not my line but I'll sign it" which I replied with "I know every line in the movie" which he smiled. Seemed happy there were so many people there, place was packed to where you could not even walk or see the booths, it was a mad house.

Yeah, that's what it sounds like, so...

RoboDoc 1, in 4 parts, being released on a streaming service but on bluray for supporters, hopefully sometime next year

RoboDoc 2 in 2/3 parts in about 12/18 months after that

RoboDoc 3 in 2 parts 12/18 months after that

Wow, this is going to over a decade since they announced this before it all is released. I have to admit, hearing that from them, I have moved into the "indifferent about the delays" camp to the "completely pissed off" camp.

The lack of updates or anything from the team is especially annoying, nothing on the Kickstarter page and anything they put out is over Facebook. Even a few simple updates would massively help perception of this amongst the backers, but the complete radio silence is seriously annoying people and something the guys really should address.

I agree. They take their time to show updates on other of their projects, but they´re usually quiet about this one. They should have told us even with the more boring, bureaucratic status of the project to keep the backers (and the people who wants to download/buy it now) interested with some info. It´s funny they´re claiming they´re doing it for the fans when their lack of information make them look like the hundreds of companies releasing subpar editions of the lesser known productions of the franchise.

I think they kept people interested with the trailers and the Peter Weller announcement, but at this point I´m sure a bunch of guys just don´t care for it anymore. They should have release small clips, trailers, pics or anything to keep generating some buzz.

They might be in the loop on the new productions from Amazon. Neumeier & Miner could be involved, which Amazon haven’t announced. One or the other is bound to come out next year, if not the following and I wouldn’t be surprised if they are timing the doc to coincide with those, making the most of global publicity.

The costs of licensing material from copyrighted titles is notoriously high. Screambox may be spending a big chunk of their capital or lending finance they will need to pay back. Why else would you release a season of only 8 episodes over 3 years. It’s a very odd schedule. Maybe they will need that time to claw back that money. They don’t strike me as a major streamer.

Even with the reputation it has, RoboCop is still a lucrative brand. It may be just as a cult cinema property, but it is still iconic. It has a built-in audience of 35 years worldwide and companies are still paying licenses to make figures and a game.

Weller’s attending cons every month and his numbers must be enough to secure regular bookings. Rogue City is bound to have reignited interest in the franchise, so it all contributes. With that considered, the doc crew and Screambox are clearly looking to capitalise on that and exploit it for the sake of the doc.

On the other hand, perhaps they have decided that they can’t cover the licensing costs and have told the crew to scale back. Not on the interviews, but content from the trilogy. They must have finished it by now with Weller’s chat and they did say they were at the point of paperwork.

Who knows. It’s all speculative. Sounds like Screambox are in charge. Don’t do this, don’t do that, don’t say a word, not our problem. Maybe they were the only offer on the table and stipulated conditions. The producer sounds a little stressed, but the director doesn’t.

Sad that backers aren't getting it first. It's going on a VOD service anyone in the US can sign up for. Backers who wanted a blu-ray of it have to wait months more to see it, maybe until next year. Plus Doc 2 and Doc 3 are still years away. It's great that we're finally seeing Doc 1 get released, but the way it's being released and the timescales are still going to annoy a lot of people.

We could speculate about how they´re going to make it in two ways: the first is they´ll give us the backers the whole package, which means we´d have to wait to next year or more (I think they said the third doc could came in two years). The second, which I´d found strange, is to give the backers "RoboDoc 1", and then shipping the rest when they´re done. In that case they´d have to pay twice for the shipping. In both cases the streaming company gets it first.

I waited 6 or 7 years for it. At this point, it doesn´t matter. The problem for me is what I already said here and on social media: once RoboDoc will be available to stream, I´m sure webpages will include clips of it as promo articles, and people would upload big chunks of it on social media. It´ll be difficult to avoid getting "spoilers" (if we could call that this) for it. The best solution would be giving the backers a digital download (or a code to watch it online) the same day it goes to streaming. Plus, as I read somewhere, ScreamBox only operates in the US, so the rest of the planet couldn´t get it unless another streaming service buys it. The guys behind RoboDoc, being from UK, should´ve thought a little about how to deal with all that stuff.

Anyway, I can understand some of the recent negative feedback. The lack of updates to the backers (and the rest, really) was off-putting.

Why would they? This product was not not made for the fans. That has been clear nearly every step of the way. I don't understand why these people would spend so much time getting everyone who worked on RoboCop together for a 4 hour documentary but continually leave let biggest supporters down, and yet that's what they've done. It seems like maybe they couldn't get a deal for a proper streaming release in order so just gave up and gave in to whoever would give them whatever money they could get. I was blocked from their facebook page for accusing them of being disrespectful. At this point I don't have much desire to support this project, and sadly it does not seem this will be a successful product for them either.

I was blocked from their facebook page for accusing them of being disrespectful.

I´ve seen a bunch of their recent posts not allowing comments, so I think you´re not the only one who´s pissed  I was pretty excited for this project when it started, but I´ve been waiting for that so long and we´ve seen so little information or updates over the years that I think I don´t care too much anymore. It´s great it´s getting done and such, but each update just delays the stuff the backers should get, so we´re not in the priority list.

This product was not not made for the fans.

Not sure if I´d say that, but it feels we´re not treated too right. And I see what happened, the thing went bigger than they thought (bud sadly not that big to include some segments related to Alpha Commando, comics and PD) and they had to rework stuff. It´s ok, but when you see updates for other documentaries from them, or even having recent ones finished before this, it feels off. They should have found a way to get more people to help editing the thing and move things fasters. I know it´s easier to say than do it, but after 7 years it´d be good to finish this one instead of working on new ones...

According to some other sources, RoboDoc (1, I assume) will be released on October 17th as a two-disc release by Screen Media. It even has a pre-order link on Amazon, but I won´t take that for sure, since some new "leaked" info has been debunked by the makers. In the UK Kaleidoscope will distribute it on December:

https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3775706/robodoc-the-creation-of-robocop-four-part-docuseries-premieres-august-29-on-screambox/

SCREAMBOX Original four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop will premiere on August 29, Bloody Disgusting is excited to announce this week. New hour-long episodes will follow weekly through September 19 on the BD-powered SCREAMBOX.

Featuring exclusive insight from stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Ronny Cox, Ray Wise, and Kurtwood Smith, director Paul Verhoeven, writers Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, special effects legend Phil Tippett, and more, RoboDoc offers an in-depth look at the making and impact of the trailblazing 1987 dystopian action classic.

Part man, part machine, all cop, RoboCop burst onto the scene as the cinematic landscape began to shift and artificial intelligence was capturing the public’s imagination. The boundary-pushing film spawned an unlikely franchise that includes two sequels, an animated series, and a Hollywood remake, along with comic books, video games, toys, and merchandise galore.

RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is co-directed by Chris Griffiths and Eastwood Allen and produced by Gary Smart. The trio previously collaborated on Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story, Pennywise: The Story of IT, and You’re So Cool, Brewster: The Story of Fright Night, all of which are available on SCREAMBOX.

Episode one, “Destination Delta City,” streams on August 29. Orion Pictures assembles a magnificent cast and crew who, unbeknownst to them, have signed up for a turbulent and career-defining ride.

Episode two, “Verhoeven’s Mantra,” streams on September 5. Notoriously demanding mad-genius director Paul Verhoeven pushes the envelope and many people’s buttons with the unprecedented shooting conditions.

Episode three, “Blood, Sweat & Steel,” streams on September 12. The resilient cast and crew relive the golden era of hands-on, practical filmmaking in the 1980s.

Episode four, “Murphy & The Machine,” streams on September 19. A cinematic icon is unleashed to the world, creating an indelible legacy with lasting memories for those involved in its production.

“We’ve crafted something together to incorporate visuals and sound in an effort to immerse viewers into the world of ’80s filmmaking and offer something completely unique to the ‘making of’ format,” explains Allen.

“As a fan of RoboCop for the past 30 years, this project has been a labor of love for me, and I can’t wait to share this unique project with the fans, especially those who have stood by us all these years,” adds Griffiths.

I also preordered the steelbook from walmart with the link posted above. Ive had the Walmart Exclusive Robodoc preordered for a while now and it was constantly getting stuck trying to ship, the order would seem to get to a point where it was going to get shipped and then it went to delay. While that was going on, I saw it was in stock again, so I attempted to make another order on top of my first one, that one too, looked like it was going to ship and stopped updating. Now I know why, apparently the bluray release is missing disc 2. Robodoc cant catch a break lol.

Yeah the US distributors messed up and only put one disc in the packaging. It is being fixed but that means there will likely be delays. Hopefully the UK release won't be affected by this, different distributor so hopefully not.

Good thing they delayed this documentary for over a year to figure out distribution. Seems like all that extra time was worth it and they totally didn't just take the easiest and cheapest option so they could move on to whatever other documentary they are currently making...

Apparently its going to stay as 1 disc for US, 2 for UK version. Saw some unhappy people replying on their facebook page. I got my Walmart Exclusive, its very nice, its only 1 disc, had 3 extra videos which I enjoyed. First extra was with the writers and director of robodoc, how they were introduced to robocop at a young age and then meeting paul for the interview, which was very cool. The other one was Randy Moore video discussing the gun and Paul Verhoeven, last one was the casting tapes which was also nice. Going to get the UK Version for the other disc. The more I learn about Paul Verhoeven the more he sounds a lot like me personality wise, not the loud part, but, you'll see I dont want to ruin it.

That story alone makes me so happy they managed to get Weller on-board. Close second is how he was apparently very popular with lady crew members.

It's a great doc regardless of his involvement, but he really was the cherry on top.

Is there anything else besides those? Something new from the development process? Or perhaps when there was heavy automatic gunfire or special effects charges going off. Something went wrong. I won’t be able to see this until well into next year and I’m curious if there’s anything like that.

The gas station and shop window explosions are already well-documented on their notoriety.

New RoboDoc update about the backers:

Hi all,

we’ve finally received the US physical copeies to ship to pledgees. Can US and Canada customers please ensure their shipping addresses are updated as soon as possible. UK, Europe and rest of the world will ship from January.

Please note that VHS clamshells will ship in January as an extra package (your blu would have already shipped in its blu-ray case) - our priority is to get blus out as soon as possible.

I know. I was hoping the backers would get an "advanced copy" before the store ones. Anyway, with X-Mas coming soon I think it´d be better to get it after it, or I´m afraid some of us could get our copy lost between the holidays.

My UK copy arrived the other day... sadly, it was missing all the printed bonuses - poster and cards - despite being a sealed copy (if anyone can send me a scan, I'd appreciate it).

Nice to own a physical version. Slowly but surely digging through the bonus segments. Unfortunately, I noticed that the discs themselves are mislabled in terms of what bonus features are on each. Minor gripe, but still...

I was hoping the segment on the games would've been a bit longer (I'd have loved something akin to Oliver Harper's retrospective on them). Still, some nice tidbits there as well.

Same here.

The other thing I would have liked to see were some alternate takes it B Roll footage. Hearing Paul McCrane's alternate delivery, the Full "It's Not My Problem" skit and Weller's voice without modulation was gold. I get it though, most of us have seen everything there is to be seen with the first film.

Now RoboDoc 2 and 3, that's what I'm excited about.

Did you purchase it or are you a backer?

I think the main games retrospective is being kept for RoboDoc 3 as they probably have the least BTS content to fill that up so that is why the Series and games are being added into that doc? Could be wrong though.

Purchase. But the Amazon listing does mention them and people have showed them off in the reviews.

It's quite possible they're holding off on that stuff, yeah. I just really hope things are not simply glossed over, like they tend to be, when it comes to anything other than the first movie. Even the "Ultimate History" book had like, what... a paragraph on the cartoons and a page on the live-action series?

But knowing how many people these guys tracked down and how much footage they probably have (AND actually put something out that's good), there's definitely hope for seeing something more in-depth than ever before in the upcoming docs.

Me too. While I like the work they did, we all knew a big bunch of the stuff they covered. The sequels and the TV shows didn´t have a bunch of making of, behind the scenes featurettes or even trivia, so I´m more interested on these.

We also have a new March 2025 update from the team regarding RoboDoc 2 and RoboDoc 3:

OFFICIAL STATEMENT REGARDING ROBODOC.2 & ROBODOC.3
To our amazing backers,

First and foremost, thank you for your unwavering support, patience, and passion forRoboDoc. When we first set out to make this documentary, the plan was to create a single film exploring the legacy of RoboCop. However, as the project evolved, it became clear that there was so much incredible content and behind-the-scenes material that we couldn't do it justice in just one release. Instead, what began as one documentary became a four-part limited series—and that was only Series One of three!

We are now in active development and post-production on RoboDoc.2 and RoboDoc.3, ensuring that we continue to deliver the most comprehensive and high-quality documentary series possible. The overwhelming critical and fan response to RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop has given us the opportunity to expand on this universe even further, and we are working hard to ensure we have more control over the distribution process this time around. This will help us bring these films to you in a way that is smoother, more efficient, and better aligned with our original vision.

We also want to address the delay in delivering certain perks, particularly the VHS box perk. Since we are now delivering three documentaries instead of one, we had to rework the design and contents of the VHS box to include all three projects. This unexpected but exciting expansion meant we needed more time to finalize the packaging and ensure it reflects the full RoboDoc series. However, backers who supported the VHS box perk would have already received their Blu-ray in the meantime.

We fully understand the frustration that delays can cause, and we deeply appreciate your patience. Our commitment has always been to deliver the best possible product, and rather than cutting corners or abandoning the project, we have dedicated ourselves to expanding it beyond what was originally promised.

We are incredibly excited about what’s coming next and will be sharing more updates onRoboDoc.2 and RoboDoc.3 soon. Thanks to your support, we are creating something far greater than we ever imagined, and we cannot wait for you to see what we have in store.
Thank you again for being part of this journey. Your belief in us has made all of this possible, and we promise it will be worth the wait!

Hopefully it'll be a bit easier this time around for those who had trouble. I'm hoping they release close together so I can kick my other half out, order Pizza, get some beverages in and watch the trio over the weekend.

There´s a chance to see pics and clips from deleted scenes from Robo2 (hopefully also from the third one) and a hour documentary about The Series sounds really cool when you can´t find anything from it (except for the VHS featurette the Archive uploaded and labels borrowed for their releases).

I'm easily more excited for RoboDoc 2 and 3 because I reckon there's so much to unearth. While there were many great moments in RoboDoc, a lot of it has been exhaustingly covered over the last 38 years, whereas the sequels feel like they've their own legend about them, with loads of untold stories.

Yup. Anything about the rest of the franchise is more appealing than the first one. We had plenty of stuff dedicated to the first and classic film, but little about the rest. So RoboDoc 2 and 3 (including the one hour doc about Robo on TV) sounds more interesting to me.

Any chance they could all get dumped together? Like instead of making individual deals for each release they make a deal with a distributor to release them all together? I know it seems unlikely but if all that footage is just sitting around this seems like the only solution that would lead to the rest being released. But if Screambox is not interested in continuing this series I imagine it is gonna be hard to get anyone to take a documentary about 2 without also having the documentary about the first, much more beloved film alongside it.

From what i understand it, unlike RoboDoc1 that had 4 parts, RoboDoc2 is only two parts. Robo3 and the series are even shorter with only one part each.

At this point that would probably be the best thing, to put it all together. But i doubt they will do that. I'm sure it must be very frustrating for the RoboDoc team.

That's my take as well. Sure it's frustrating for them, but they had all the time in the world to figure this stuff. In the near decade this project was gestating there seemed to be no foresight, no structure for release, no plan besides film a ton of interviews and figure it out later. But it was also a project they charged people for in advance. So there was a big disconnect between the vision and the reality that continues to play out. But the sad thing is the great stuff they project seemingly exists, but it will not get out to the public unless they find someone else to pay them more money for the stuff they already got paid for, but not like just selling DVDs directly through the kickstarter or something like that. The distribution model is strange.

This is also why I did not back the project. I was always dubious of the kickstarter concept. Since this documentary I have only bought two things from kickstarter, both from established creators, and one took so long to arrive I still don't care for the process. I prefer to buy a product when it exists. In the longrun maybe that is the only way a project like this could have happened, but its a shame it could not have been a more direct and clear route.

Poor Robo, this reminds me of the situation with the statue and how long it just sat around before finally seeing the light of day. But the statue is there now, and he's not going anywhere. The first Robodoc did come out, and most people say its great. So there is still life to RoboCop, he just a little slow now... slower than usual. After all this I can't help but think of Rogue City. We got the game that was promised, and an unexpected little spinoff not too long after. A complete RoboCop project that actually went somewhere? That's got to the greatest achievements in RoboCop history since the 90s.

New "update" on RoboDoc 2 via mail:

We are currently in negotiations regarding RoboDoc 2, including distribution and post-production funding. This process is complex and ongoing, particularly as the original distributor holds first refusal and has since restructured their company and release strategy. These factors have inevitably slowed progress, but work is continuing behind the scenes.

We understand frustrations around communication and fulfillment, and we do not take those concerns lightly. However, we have always stated that our primary channels for official updates are our website and Facebook, where we continue to share developments as they are confirmed.

We remain fully committed to this project and to our supporters. This has been a challenging journey, but it has always been driven by passion, not profit — and we stand by the work we’ve created.

New "update" on RoboDoc 2 via mail

I've been anticipating RoboDoc 2 and 3 more so than the first, so any slice of information is good.

I'm confident it'll come out, I'm just not confident I'll still be alive to see it.

Yeah, I´m more interested in everything after the first one, since we have plenty of information and featurettes from the first one, but little on sequels.

I'm just not confident I'll still be alive to see it.

I´m starting to worrying about that too!

Pretty much the same for me. Hope springs eternal but, still, eh.

Not to be a put-down but Pimp made some good points about how the whole thing overall seemed done rather 'seat of the pants', with just an assumption if they did the legwork someone would just definitely bite on helping them distribute it. Given Robo is still an endeared property with some life and love in it I get having that assumption. But every facet of show business over the years has shown arguably much more 'sure things' never even getting off the ground - much less released, for myriad reasons. It is a shame as I know they've done gobs of work and don't want to discount that at all, and it should be showcased, not just for us fans but as a showing of a labor of love to preserving a part of what is now classic cinema. Will it be before dirty apes rule? Again, eh.
