RoboCop: Fact and Fiction - Whats next?

-----------------------------------

In an attempt to do shorter videos around 5 min. I think i could cut up the content into parts if it becomes too long.
So far content such as this could be made:

# For a Dollar. Bixby Snyder focused. All his appearances as well as the use of the "id buy that for a dollar" in other media.
(Estimated viewer Interest: 85%)

# Superior firepower. A look at weapons such as the gun arm and other things from all versions of RoboCop. (Auto-9 and the Cobra gun NOT included) Could have info on things like the ED-209 arm used in RvsT games.
(Estimated viewer Interest: 80%)

# Robo Tech. A look at Robo accessories and gadgets in all media. Alpha commando may be too much to handle in depth so a few gadgets could be selected to represent.)
(Estimated viewer Interest: 60%)

# Babyfood. The science behind the paste. Does Robo really eat babyfood? Also a look at the use of babyfood in comics, games etc.
(Estimated viewer Interest: 50%)

# Robo chamber. Info on how the chamber changed in all media. Also info on the chair.
(Estimated viewer Interest: 30%)

# Robo Family. What happened to Murphy family and how his wife changed her name in various version of RoboCop. Analyzing info from all media and scripts.
(Estimated viewer Interest: 15%)

Sounds like a great selection of videos for the future. I think your viewer interest ratings are more or less accurate, though I'd like to think there is more interest in the last one about Robo's family. Maybe it is just because I finished watching the Series again recently, but I personally would be more interested in that video than the ones going over his hardware. His wife and son (and even father) have popped up in various forms across the years so there is something there for sure. Obviously I'm looking forward the baby food "behind the paste' video most of all.

And if you are looking for another suggestion, something I thought of the other day was a video about the various songs commissioned for RoboCop movies and shows. I don't mean the score, but rather "Show Me Your Spine" from the first movie, "The Kid Goes Wild" from 2, and "Future to This Life" from the Series. Having tie in songs from rock bands is kind of a thing of the past. Those songs might not have made much impact on the RoboCop franchise as a whole, but I still think it would be interesting to explore how they came to be featured in the RoboCop movies/shows.

That is a great suggestion. In the past I've actually tried to dig and get in contact with people behind the "kid goes wild" song but to not much success sadly.

The complicated copyright aspects of youtube probably stops this episode from being made however. It would get bombarded with copyright claims.

Interesting topics! The family one pops to me. It could be fun to address the changes on names from every sequel, spin off (and even the remake), and I´m sure the scripts from the trilogy (and the TV shows) have interesting trivia for make it interesting (you know, the family going to another planet, the wife death due to prescription drugs in PD...).

Since the rock tunes would be a pain in the butt, how about a score retrospective from the whole series? It´d be fun to talk about the absence of Poledouris in 2, the leit motiv used in The Series and the western inspired score for PD. I´m not sure if that´d please viewers, but it´s something way different than staying with the same two things people want to hear over and over.

Oh, i don't remember that. Was that mentioned in the TV show? Or something from a script or writer interview?

how about a score retrospective from the whole series?
That's a good topic, but the same nasty copyright problems apply here unfortunately.
In any new episode i need to rely more on non official Robo soundtrack music. In the Ride video i used a lot of game music which worked really well.

Ideally id like to use fan made/remixed versions of the soundtracks or a custom made score for an episode, but i have yet to find someone to work with on that.

Regarding Ellen Murphy being dead in PD this is what Joe O'brian said in a chat during 2000. (full chat in the Archive PD section)

Ah yes, Ellen's death. We were originally going to be a bit more explicit about it, but decided to make the details of her death more ambiguous - partially because the fact of her death was more important to the story than the cause of her death, but also because, as I've said elsewhere, I hate continuity. I wanted to let it be a blank that someone else could fill someday - maybe it'll be us, maybe it'll be someone else. But if you look at RoboHistory, as well as how the characters react in PD, it's not hard to puzzle it out.

Ellen was aware of what had happened to Murphy, even if she thought that he was spiritually/mentally dead. She obviously didn't share that information with James (again, to spare him the pain the knowledge would cause - incidentally the same reason Murphy doesn't reveal himself to James later), but it was obviously deeply troubling to her. She died not long after, because James wound up in an OCP corporate orphanage, which wouldn't have happened if he were an adult. That rules out natural causes.

An accident? Probably not, because why James' hated of his father as a result? Really, there are only a handful of logical possibilities, none of them particularly pleasant. She may have fallen into a deep depression, a not-unexpected consequence of losing one's spouse, especially one as great as Alex Murphy, a pretty moral and upstanding guy. Depression sometimes leads to suicide - although I'm not crazy about that explanation, because it implies that she abandoned James as well. More likely she was the victim of some sort of violence - a home invasion that, had Murphy not been killed, he would have been there to prevent. Again, not one I'm particularly prepared to embrace, because I think the poor woman suffered greatly in her life, and I don't like to think of her going out that way.

The fact of the matter is, that even though we didn't technically write for the Ellen Murphy character, she haunts PRIME DIRECTIVES. And I liked her a lot. James loved her more than the world, and her loss made him cold and machinelike (ironic, no?) - perfect OCP material. But I have no desire to dwell on the pathology of her demise. Hence, I prefer to think in poetic terms - as far as I'm concerned, Ellen Murphy died of grief. From James' perspective, she died because Murphy died, and Murphy died because he was protecting others and not his family - hence the anger (check out Anthony Lemke's face when he places flowers on Ellen's grave and then looks to his dad's - he's just seething). That's why I like the end of RESURRECTION so much - she's there in spirit. Both of these men cease their conflict to honor the memory of the woman they both loved.

What if you use actual scenes from the films/tv shows with the music to avoid that problem? Not sure how it´d work with movies (as they could be a pain in the ass), but people uploaded several episodes of The Series, Alpha Commando, The Marvel Cartoon or even complete episodes from PD without problems. I guess the TV stuff are in some kind of limbo...

That is clearly the best option. The soothing harmonics of Robo fans could be quite the powerful experience.

The only danger is if it is so good and pitch perfect that MGM thinks it's the real deal and flags the music anyway.

One of the early scripts had Murphy having some kind of hallucination as a human due to the damage suffered on previous chapters (think of Robo´s lying on a table during "Resurrection", but with him connected to an alternative AI -Legion in the finished product-). He lives some moments as Murphy, doubting if his life as RoboCop was a long, harsh nightmare, or if this human life is a lie. At some point things go weird, and he sees his wife on the floor, dead, after getting (way too much) sleeping pills.

I assume that´s the real reason why Ellen is dead, put it there by Murphy´s subconscience. After all:

She may have fallen into a deep depression, a not-unexpected consequence of losing one's spouse, especially one as great as Alex Murphy, a pretty moral and upstanding guy. Depression sometimes leads to suicide.

I think in that context makes sense to me.

When I was in high school I did a long presentation about RoboCop that was so infamous that I was asked to do it again in a different class. I think some videos of the second run were posted on YouTube in the early days and I remember posting the links here. Anyway, the point is when I did these presentations I made sure to address the red visor, and made a list of all the RoboCop media I could think of and divided it by visor color. Obviously there is not a ton of content here, but there is something. Have you considered lumping some of these ideas together for some kinda general Robo trivia video or an episode of this series that does a few different topics briefly? Some kinda "10 things you didn't know about RoboCop" video, those kind of things seem to be popular.

Yeah absolutely. Back in high school when I did my comprehensive RoboCop presentation I included a section about the red vs black visors, so all the framework is there in my brain somewhere. And while there are no massive revelations to come from such a topic, I think fans will be interested to see that the application of the red visor isn't entirely random. Anyway I will get some notes together when I get some free time and send you something in the near future.

If it helps, I asked one of the artists on Alpha Commando about the red visor, and he answer he doesn´t know the reason behind it, but he believes that a) back then they worked with real colors instead of digital and they didn´t have a wide selection of colors to make a shiny black visor work and b) probably they did it to pop up the colors of the character a little bit.

Here´s the written answer Mark Lewis gave it when asked about the red visor:

"Again, I was not involved in coloring decisions. I pretty much had my hands full just keeping up with cleaning up and assisting with the character models! But I suspect that your theory is most likely correct. Today, cartoons are colored on computer, and you have millions of color possibilities. Back when we did RoboCop: Alpha Commando, things were still animated on individual cels, each painted by hand. And the available color choices were far more limited. I suspect the choice of a red for the visor might have been because there weren’t a lot of good grays to use as highlights over black. Or maybe it was just that it gave the visor an extra little pop of color, to keep RoboCop from looking too monotonous for a cartoon."

I interviewed him back when Robo turned 30.

These recent weeks there's been a new copyright holder that block all content related to "RoboCop: The Series." Usually copyright holders just claim the video, like MGM, but these new guys completely block it worldwide. It's automated so it's been pretty aggressive.

They respond pretty quickly however when i dispute the block and usually it is resolved and un-blocked the same day. These fact and fiction videos fit perfectly under fair use/documentary so the block is false.

Oh, great. I was trying to do a short "doc" about the release of The Series in Spain and I was happy no-one cared about the copyrights of that. Same with PD as well, I was hoping I could put the fan edit there too at some point.

I only wish the recent copyright claims has something to do with a new, official, release. That´d be cool. But I´m afraid it´s YouTube´s Skynet. I´ve been doing some music covers recently and got some copyright claims because they analyzed the melodies. They didn´t care if someone else were playing on that version. While I understand they should track whole movies for free there, they should leave alone people who used clips to create something new or do something educational with it (and some of us don´t monetize videos, so...).

The frustrating part is that they create a copyright claim/block for EVERY separate episode of the series included in a video. For the "old man and delta city" episode i got three separate blocks that had to be disputed individually. To their credit it was solved and removed within hours but it's frustrating.

I had a series "commander cash" clip compilation up and it got a block for all episodes included. That is something like TEN separate blocks on one video. I will probably not bother with that.

This is some truly sad news. It sucks that one of the Fact of Fiction videos got taken down, though hopefully it will be back up soon. This also means that all the episodes of the Series are gone. There was a great playlist of all the episodes and it was my go-to way to watch the series. I'd be happy to pay full price for a high quality official collection of the Series on DVD or Bluray, but sadly such a thing does not exist. The quality of the youtube videos seemed as high as any bootleg DVD, though I might have to pick up one of those DVDs just to have easy access to all episodes. I guess there is a chance the recent interest in protecting the copyright of the Series could be a good thing, and they are just doing this because they are planning to actually put out an official release of the Series... but I won't hold my breath.

At first I thought it had to do with a future plan of a Blu Ray release, but then I assume the current owners of The Series just want to claim everything on YouTube, yet doing nothing with the whole thing, as usual.

Interestingly, i had a fan edit of Robo:PD up at the channel and it was also blocked. But not because of anything from PD but for the series footage they use.

I feel the recent Amazon deal and the sudden need to block the series can't be a coincidence. The Robo TV rights are complicated for sure but i don't get why there otherwise would now be a need to block it. I mean they don't claim it and put ads on it as is usually the case with studios. Here they block it completely.

I hope all that stuff means a decent release in the future and not being pricks with a license just because they own the character. It seems there´s a new game in the works, so RoboCop is getting new stuff. But it sucks how restrictive they could get with RoboProductions no studio cared in the last 20, 30 years.

Maybe they are planning to add the Series to Amazon Prime soon? PD has always been a 'staple' of their Prime library, so adding the Series would make sense. We have been talking about an official DVD/Bluray release for the Series for years, but at this point adding it to a streaming service seems a bit more likely. And that would not be a bad way to have access to it and maybe catch a few new fans who had never heard of it before.

I also wanted to learn more about all the the techs he has; Each film we see different ones assigned to him. Like what happened to Tyler and Roosevelt? They were there from the beginning of his construction.
But learning about his family and how they dealt with his death has been of interest to me. Murphy stalks her and when he finally sees her again, he tells her he doesn’t know her. I’m surprised she didn’t say that if truly didn’t remember her, why was he always driving by?

. I agree with a upgrade to episode #3 of "Facts And Fiction" about how much flesh or organs there are left in Murphy´s robot body.
. The new MK11´s RoboCop uses a concept from "RoboCop vs Terminator" comic about only the head (and neck) had organic parts.
http://www.swankworld.com/Games/retro/nes/robocop/images/armor.JPG
. In the RoboCop last stand comic mini-series (volume 6), his organic parts are like RoboCop 2: head parts and a part of the spine.
. And a controversial part: is his face a prosthesis? Total or partial, from the nose down? So it's okay for that part to be exposed?
. It´s only a suggestion. The episode is well made after all. And we must not improve on perfection... only in case of vital information. Only the author can decide.

I think the face has to be organic. The plugged bullet wound seems to point towards it being Murphy's real face. When his wife feels his face in RoboCop 2, it is soft to the touch but cold due to the mechanical parts.

In RoboCop vs the Terminator, Robo uses the organic Terminator skin when rebuilding himself.

So the Archive will give us updates of that RoboCop Vs. The Predator movie?

Other topics I would like to see covered one of these days would be about Robocop in the comics, cartoons, video games, and the tv show, including Prime Directives. Also, Robo’s Enemies like Ed-209, Robocain, Otomo, and even human foes that disliked him like Dick Jones, Dr. Faxx, Hedgecock, McDaggett, Mr. Fleck etc.

One that I would like to see is a debunking of the notion that Robo is merely a knock off Judge Dredd (which has been perpetuated thanks to the 2000AD documentary).

I would also like to see a video on Robo’s Allies like Lewis, Reed and his fellow officers. Or a series about his family. The memories he has of his wife and son, the trouble that started when he began spying on her and denial of knowing her. And even the relationship with his family on the series, including when his father found out his son was still alive.
