New RoboCop TV Series from Amazon

-----------------------------------

Well, it seems it´s "official “A giant tech conglomerate collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime — a police officer who’s part man, part machine.”

The description is so vague it makes me afraid of it. No sign of OCP, Detroit on Murphy on that logline. A new "RoboCop" series, done right, would be amazing, so I hope they won´t follow the steps of the 2014 reboot, changing almost everything and messing with the original design way too much.

The description does feel like it's just there for the sake of being there and is being kept vague on purpose, because they haven't hammered out the details. But if it IS any true indication, I can quite easily see it being spun off into something that fits the "RoboCop" name, but not the character and setting as we know them.

I hope that´s the case. But it feels off they didn´t mention even OCP or Detroit.

That´s the thing that scares me. I still think a RoboCop series, living in the streaming world we´re in, could have many chances to be good. Violence isn´t an issue anymore (didn´t see "The Boys", but I know they´re not shy with gruesome stuff, and it´s an Amazon product as well), you could play with the episode´s lenght, and storywise you have time to develop an arc. In the sequels they tried to put everything they could and things didn´t go well, because they have to fit into a 2 hour film. Here we could have more than 12 hours if they want, time to showcase the characters, their motivations and how their acts influence on the plot.

I hope they´ll pay more attention of "RoboCop Returns"´s reception, with Blomkamp´s idea of reusing the original design and such, instead of "let´s do whatever we want because nobody recognizes the character".

I can see them taking maybe 1 or 2 episodes to build up the corruption and the criminal life community. Getting to know who Alex Murphy was, his family life. Breaking in a new partner, learning the ropes of how a corrupt city run by a corporation operates. Then by episode two or three we end up seeing signs of what they're working on in terms of replacing police officers with cyborgs or the development of cyborg technology every few scenes until episodes 3 of a 10 episode where the robocop program is revealed. Could be a very dark series.

It's a shame it reads like a new adaptation of the original film, but I guess that's the way things go these days.

Rogue City will have to do when it comes to some form of sequel, although I'm intrigued to see if they'll keep the original design. I know it'll likely be CGI or an amalgamation of that and practical, but it's always interesting to see how they'll go about it.

It makes me think of RoboCop 2. For those who were lucky enough to be about when the original was released, it must have been something to not only see the new suit in the sequel looking like "a damned show car", but also being blue.

Seems the TV show of RoboCop (not the Dick Jones one) has now been officially greenlit at Amazon.

I´ve been seeing that news from thousands of different accounts in the last days, but I thought I read last week that RoboCop was still in "development hell". Anyway, I´ll believe something when we´ll find a paparazzi pic of them filming it, or a teaser, or a promotional picture.

I'm intrigued to see if they'll keep the original design. I know it'll likely be CGI or an amalgamation of that and practical, but it's always interesting to see how they'll go about it.

Don´t count on it, chum!

Sorry. Had to say that. I´d love a new adaptation that respects the history and character, but let´s face it: I doubt they´d make him slow and I doubt they´ll make him run on DOS with these scanlines as his vision. I´d LOVE to see something like the newer videogames, opting for a "retrofuturistic" look like the newer Blade Runner, where they still put Atari and low quality machinery in the middle instead of ultra-modern, "Minority Report" crystal tactil screens and over the top stuff. So, I don´t think they´ll want to recreate the original suit.

That being said, the original suit had space for upgrades. The fiberglass parts are fine, but the black spots could be upgraded with new materials. When you see any Robo production in HD you can spot scratches all over the gloves, and sometimes they look rubbery because... well, they were made that way. I´m sure right now they could redo the hands to make them feel like rigid metal, or tweak the visuals with CGI to make them look that way. That´d be cool.

It's a shame it reads like a new adaptation of the original film, but I guess that's the way things go these days.

Problem here is that RoboCop is almost 40 and newer generations don´t have idea about the character. If I was the guy behind this new project, I´d start with good old Robo and give some kind of backstory linked to his past, so you could show stuff that would explain his backstory without having to redo everything one more time. Think of the videogames, The Series or Prime Directives, where they tried to link some new elements to his past, so you can show via flashbacks snippets from his past.

I´m not a big fan of explaining again his life, or even worse...

I can see them taking maybe 1 or 2 episodes to build up the corruption and the criminal life community. Getting to know who Alex Murphy was, his family life. Breaking in a new partner, learning the ropes of how a corrupt city run by a corporation operates.

Spending too much time with human Murphy. Again, it´s fine on flashbacks, but I can see them working like the Netflix Daredevil show: showing the "final form" of the character in the last episode of the season!

But the description of the show is so vage that there´s a chance we won´t have a Murphy to start with. Which would be sad. At the other hand, sounds so risky to make me interested. What if they do something that extreme that shows a corporation that builts RoboCops?

I´m afraid the end result would be something like RebootCop but with blood this time. I guess Murph´s time as a slow, cool looking cyborg is over :(

A guess is that the show will be heavily flashback oriented. Like they did with the Arrow tv series.

50% of the episode will be scenes with Alex Murphy, and people from his past will then show up in present time with RoboCop.
They kind of did that for the RoboCop: The series "Tin Man" episode.

From reading all the comments here, it seems we all mostly agree there are only two paths forward for RoboCop: Either its a nostalgia driven legacy sequel that respects the retrofuture style of the original film (like Rogue City), or its a modernized remake/reboot that starts from scratch (like the 2014 movie). Rogue City really reminded me of just how dated the world and technology of RoboCop is. But the main themes, the things RoboCop was trying to say, are more relevant than ever.

Even though the reboot movie was disappointing, I still think there is merit in the idea of rebooting RoboCop. But there are a lot of parts open to reinvntion. For example, RoboCop was set in Detroit, the motor city, but is that really relevant anymore? Technology has evolved into a much more digital direction than the big physical monsters of metal that inspired RoboCop. So I see plenty of room to update the story of RoboCop. The reboot had some good ideas, it just didn't have the time, budget, or script to fully explore them. A full season of a TV series would have more room to explore the themes of RoboCop in a new setting.

The other alternative I see is just dragging Peter Weller back for one more rodeo, and then another, and then letting the character die with him. But we also know that isn't really what Weller wants, he made it clear he will come back for a big paycheck and nothing more. It was cool to see him back for Rogue City, but from his effort its pretty clear he was doing it because it was easy money and not out of some great devotion to the fans. Fair enough. But at this point in time, given his age and disposition, is that really gonna work for RoboCop 4? And even if they did pay him enough to come back for a full movie or series, is that really the best direction for the RoboCop franchise to go?

As reboot talk has been heating up again, for some reason I am reminded of Alpha Commando. Not really anyone's favorite RoboCop spinoff, but it is notable to me for one reason. It is the only time in an official RoboCop story that we have really seen the classic RoboCop look redesigned. Not counting the reboot movie, because even its 'classic' look was a bit too dfferent. But Alpha Commando RoboCop takes the classic look, puts its own little spin on it, shows a Robo that was a bit more mobile, with various attachments expanding his abilities beyond just a tank with a gun. Alpha Commando isn't great but I see the seed of something there. Because while it seems Robo is stuck between either being a nosalgic leegacy franchise or needing a complete restart, I'd like to think there is a midground, a way RoboCop can move forward while still reespecting the style and themes that made Robo so iconic in the first place.

I honestly think you might be on to something here. An "Alpha Commando"/"Corporate Wars" style approach could work... let people have classic Robo, but introduce him in a new setting where he could even partially be played as a bit of a fish-out-of-water character when needed. This could be potentially mixed in with "late 80s near future" flashbacks too. It can easily become tacky though.

The way streaming shows are done now, I can also, sadly, totally see them doing a "RoboCop" show where the first season is nothing but teases and hints and we don't get an actual RoboCop until the very end...

My thoughts as well. And the news tagline is so vague that I think they want to redo everything from scratch. And I really don´t like it, really. Maybe it´s nostalgia, but I´m really tired of "recreations" of an stablished franchise, where the creatives think they could improve the original (remember, a bunch of people related to 2014´s RebootCop thought the original was a dated, cheesy B-Movie) changing EVERYTHING from the original while playing safe at the same time (and putting forced references to the original so they could think they can trick you to believe you´re watching your favourite character).

RoboCop has an irregular career after the fist one, and most of the sequels, products and TV shows failed to get the right tone from the Verhoeven/Neumeier/Miner one. So why recreate the whole thing when you could try to make a continuation that gives what the original did? Existencial themes, satire, violence, humour... RebootCop barely has any of these elements. And they tried too hard to be extremely serious and extremely Nolan. Also they tried to transform it into a fairy tale with a heartwarming ending where the Robo-family goes to a picnic. RoboCop is a tragedy.

Who knows what will happen. Who knows if it´ll happen. But I´ll watch it anyway.

Saw the post on social media, but didn´t took a look as the website didn´t look too "safe". You know, we had fake stories in the past with Robo, so I´d wait to find trusted sites to make it official. Or, well, I´ll wait till the first teaser or something, as we had several projects that never came into fruition.

Anyway...

"Mark Kyle" is a soldier and the main protagonist this time, who 'dies' in combat and is brought back as another RoboCop who is tutored by the original Alex Murphy RoboCop.

They can´t stop "re-imagining" the whole thing, uh?

I´m sure, in this day, they have access to internet. And I´m sure, with a quick search, they could find this website. So, they´d know what most of the fans want. That said, having the original as a tutor seems like a desesperate way to grab fans to me. They want to toss everything from the original and do their own spin, like they tried with the 2014´s Reboot, but adding the original feels like they´re too scared to do it.

On a positive note, having the original as a tutor figure would mean that they gave Weller a truck full of money, so that would make some people happy. But I doubt he´d end doing something interesting.

Now we have these details, I'm not sure about this... The story sounds stupid.

I don´t know. I´d love to be amazed by it, but I´ll keep my hopes low. Sometimes I think they should give good old Robo rest, as they always try to "update" the concept without giving the fans something related to the original.

My other half said Elle, a prequel to the Legally Blonde series, while taking away from the original film by not leaving Elle where she was at the beginning of said film, was a decent prequel.

She said it remained faithful in spirit and tone and was cast well enough wherein you could believe these characters were younger incarnations. So yeah, I was slightly hopeful that maybe they'll do RoboCop right. After all, everyone who is involved with Robo in some form these days is a massive fan who loves the original, right?

I don´t know. At this point we went from super-soldier robotic and an old Murphy as a mentor to this new synopsis that tells nothing, so I don´t know what to think. I assume it´ll be a retelling, as you say, because studios think audiences are dumb enough and you have to tell the origins over and over again in case you don´t get it. Plus, a retelling give them the opportunity to mess with the suit because, of course, they need to change it.

I don't have high hopes. Life is easier this way.

Yeah. Yesterday on some chat I was saying that back then I´d be really excited for a new content, knowing at least it´d be a continuation and some elements like the suit would be back again. Right now, not too much. I´d like to be kind of optimistic and try to give an aseptic look to the whole project, but we were tricked way too often to be happy for a new content.

I feel like if they get the suit wrong, it's gonna turn off a lot of people right away. The same thing happened with the 2014 reboot. The revamped suit looked alright, not great but I could have lived with it... but then they made it all black and it looked like shit. If they aren't reusing the original design, my interest in watching will drop sharply. The problem with the 2014 version was that it looked too generic and with the boring colour, you'd have been forgiven for thinking it was Batman or a black coloured Iron Man outfit. The suit itself is an iconic part of the overall character, changing it means you might as well call the show something else.

The suit itself is an iconic part of the overall character, changing it means you might as well call the show something else.

The thing with RoboCop is that they´re always trying to reimagine the whole thing. And that means making the character more agile, like he could jump like Super Mario in the reboot, and be more efficient that anybody in the world. So, of course, they´ll need to redo his origins and, of course, change the suit in the process.

For me, I can´t see any trouble with the original suit. But I can see some things that they could improve: the hands. With today´s HD Robo´s hands always look "rubbery" (well, because they weren´t made with solid materials) and you can spot scratches and some other stretching marks on them. With todays technology they could make the hands look metallic with several tricks, from 3D modelled pieces to some CGI tweaking to changing the gloves in case there´s a close up instead of a general view of him, etc... That´s something that have room to be improved. As for the suit itself, can´t see what they could improve. The Reboot did a "version" of the original, but I didn´t see it as an improvement over the original: the 1987 have an overall cool design, and the legs looked complex and full of details. The RebootLegs are boring, dull, and doesn´t have anything interesting on it. The fake ABS midsection didn´t impress me. What I think it looked "cute" is the fact they could "cut" some of the actor´s physics to make the illusion he has small joints between body and limbs and such. But I think the overall opinion of the audience is "beh".

And the need to redo the original... Man, I miss the 90s and 2000s. You didn´t need to redo everything, you keep going with the character and his story. I meant, the 1988 Marvel Cartoon and the 1994 live action series were creative enough to do an opening where you get the basics of his story in over a minute. Cop gets killed in the line of duty, you put the faces of the characters between, like Lewis/Madigan, the chairman, the scientifics, etc, and end telling that this cop is now a cyborg. I´m afraid this 8 episode series could give us a slow introduction of Alex Murphy as a man, his family, his relationships on the force, and then in the middle he´s RoboCop. And I don´t want it. As much as I love the character, I don´t need to spend hours knowing him as a human. I don´t care. I don´t think is neccesary: I know he´s a good guy who didn´t have luck in his life. I don´t need to see his credentials or cases in human form. I want the cyborg. I think it´s ok to spice the series with some flashbacks if there´s a need for it, like PD did back in the day, but after all these years of diluted, watered down projects, cancelled movies and mediocre comics I´d love to spend time with Robo instead of his human self. Let the cyborg show us some humanity with his grief with his memories, and let´s move on with the story.

I´m also worried that they could redo the film in 8 episodes. I mean, it could be a "logical" step for a supposed "season 1": you have to tell the whole origins, so you could spend each chapter to kill Murphy, and then go after the baddies one by one, until he catches (and finishes) Clarence (or whoever he´ll be this time).

Man, how cool it´d be to get the first chapter with the cyborg doing his work without having to spend time with a fan-fiction redo of the original tragic backstory. :(

Based on how similar sci-fi or superhero TV shows go these days, I doubt we will actually see Murphy become RoboCop until the final episode of the first season. Kind of like Daredevil. Or Arrow with its multiple seasons of flashbacks. It seems these shows think the origin is the most important part of the story, when the original RoboCop gave us like 10 minutes of Murphy before he died. It's also a cheeky way to save money on the suit or CGI. So I am expecting like half the first season to be pure set up following Murphy as a cop. Then he will die later in the season, only to be brought back as RoboCop at the very end. Then my guess for a second season would be the plot of the first movie with him solving his murder and tracking down the killers. I definitely think they are going to do whatever they can to keep the suit to a minimum and prioritize the human Murphy as much as possible, even if its just to save money.

That said, I am cautiously optimistic about this project. The first few Amazon original shows were quite bad, but they have come a long way since then. Shows like the Boys show they can give a pop culture adaption the time and money it needs to work. This casting certainly isn't confirmation that the show is definitely happening, anything could change between now and when they start shooting. But its a step in the right direction, and at least seems more plausible then some previous announcements. I'm not jumping up and down with excitement, but I am happy things seem to be moving foward.

Is it a typical "original actor approves" name drop, or could it be Eden has indeed let something slip? Maybe Stevens is actually playing that Marc Kyle character and we're getting a bit of misdirection.

"Weller insisted be retained"?
"Peter wants to preserve from the original"?

Errr... what?!

That would lead to several thesis. From this dude meeting with Weller to (kind of) having his approval with a chat, to the media trolling to avoid spoilers (what if he´d play that Soldier and Weller the original?) or to crazy situations, like a series where you jump in time, so he´d do a younger version while Weller would work on the "future/current time" one.

Don´t know, it´s too early to have something solid. I´ve seen some short interviews with Stevens about the project and I kinda like him. He doesn´t look like the typical "badass/can do everything/arrogant" like Kinnaman, plus he admited it´s impossible to do the same the original did. So at least he didn´t piss on the 1987 like Oldman did back in 2014. That´s something.

I've had a thought that may be a case of me jumping the gun.

The showrunner is Peter Ocko, so I'm guessing that's who Stevens was referring to. That doesn't explain the whole Eden thing unless it was just the phrasing he used.

I blew my load too quickly. To be fair that's now the third time I've done so in all my years of being on this planet so I'm content with it.

Sorry guys.

Richard Eden has replied to my comment -

"I believe Dr. Weller is a part of it. I'd love to join him, as I'm sure the other Murphys would. For me, a cameo would be fine."

While I think cameos from previous actors would be cute, I´m not sure if it´d be distracting. I meant, you´re digging the plot and BLAM! Weller appears as "OCP executive 12". Wouldn´t it be distracting to see the original Robo on it? It would be a cute nod to the original, and watching Eden in there would be nice, but not sure how the reaction could be. I´m sure for the casual viewer wouldn´t mean anything, as they probably won´t know who these guys are, but for the fans...
