If Neumeir and Miner were the ones revising their old drafts it wouldn't be a problem. But then they said some other dude, whose only notable project seems to be the upcoming Terminator film, was rewriting it... |
Based on the leaked plot for Terminator Dark Fate, this is not a good sign. We may very well get Robocop Returns: As a transgender cyborg fighting for social justice against the evil white patriarchy. |
With the RoboCop Returns villain being a non-binary transgender tree that identifies as a lesbian ironing board.

Honestly, that's not a far cry from what Neuminer and Miner had for the villain in their first draft of Robocop Returns!

Its gonna be hard to do a new movie that is based on the original that is now over 30 years old. Especially since the remake introduced lots of CGI (which was cool, but excessive). Many fans mentioned the Terminator films in their comments and I think its a good comparison. Why is it that the T-800 is still coming back to fight baddies that are way more advanced? If they use the original Robo suit, it may just look silly. If they try to upgrade it with layered CGI effects, it may look worse.
Prime Directives already tried to create a direct sequel to the original, the other sequels took the franchise in different directions. How do you take a piece of the past and inject it into a modern movie?
They used time travel in Avengers Endgame and people loved it, but Robocop is a film about realism and a mildly exaggerated sense of geopolitical doom. You can't just put together a hammy scifi story for a character like Robocop.
