This is from MGM themselves.
It says "Killed in the line of duty. October 24th 2029. Rebuilt January 14th 2030" about a third of the way through.
Now, as we know RoboCop is never given a year. That way when it came to said year it could not be noted that RoboCop got it wrong. Case in point, back To The Future: Part II. I still want my God damned hover board and they have three years to come up with the goods.
We can see in RoboCop the lab technicians celebrating the new year so it could be feasable that Robo was partially completed at that point and finished on the 14th of January. Morton also says that "[He's] confident [he] can have a prototype ready in 90 days". But why has MGM done this? I assume it's a newer trailer so where have they got the dates from? At least the time from initial idea to prototype is correct.
I know that Rocco Gioffre who did the matte paintings was told to envision Detroit in the early 2020's as a base for the skyline but even those dates are out.

I've seen that trailer before, but didn't think about the dates then for some reason. I think whoever did that trailer did a terrible job. It shows way too much from the movie and it lacks any excitement.
As for the dates, I'm guessing they just pulled those out of nowhere as a "cool" thing to add to the trailer. Rubbish!

Wow... very cool but admit... the movie(s) still use guns, cars and even tv-sets from the late 80's and the beginning of the 90's.
We don't see Plasma/LCD or any slim TV's in the Robocop movies, just regular CRT ones transformed with some props attached at the top and the below to look like they are 16:9 aspect ratio.
At least the Back to the Future movies depicted a better future except of course the flying cars... considering BTTF II is set in 2015 and 2015 is 3 years ahead 2012 I don't know how could be possible to people drive (or should I say fly?) in the next 3 years.
We know Robocop movies are dystopic movies, they depict an alternate reality impossible to occur in our time, like Blade Runner (set in 2019)
See ya!

Yeah that's one of the problems.
The Auto-9 had never been seen before and even the Desert Eagle was relatively new in 1987.
It's like any film. One thing I love about 2001: A Space Odyssey is the flat screen monitors that were mocked up. It's just a shame that the rest of the film was a bit too far forward.
Take Alien. It looks great in a futuristic industrial way (The Sulaco) but the second you see Ripley's hair that's it. You can then see it's a product of 1979. Unfortunately fashions change but at least the M4A1 pulse Rifle used ballistic rounds instead of lasers. Even if by the year 2122 they are not using guns that look like the aforementioned rifle, they could still be using bullets.

Look at the ED-209...He'd never fly in today's age that's all about sleekness and curves and aesthetics.
Part of the fun of science fiction is the fact that it's only one vision of the future, not an accurate, scientifically based prediction of what really is going to have (even if the technical aspects are based on completely plausible theoretical projections). So watching Robocop isn't seeing what the future is like, it's seeing what people in the 80's thought the future would be like around nowish.
Which is why putting an exact date on it kind of spoils it. Because it's fun to suspend your disbelief and think maybe someday this could all be really happening, despite dialogue, technology and pop culture references (think of the Iron Man comic in Robocop... more likely to be a DVD today) that unintentionally, inevitably date the experience. That fact that it is 2012 doesn't make 2001 a lesser movie, but it put a drag on that "What if?" factor, where you're like "What if this really does happen in 2001?" I doubt anyone is going to watch that movie called 2012 next year and go "Wow what if this actually happens in 2012?"
Which is why I prefer Roboco not having an exact year/decade. _________________

Well, the fourth draft of the original script contains a news segment mentioning Sylvester Stallone's death at the age of 97, making the films date 2043.
Of course, officially there is no date.
