Josh :
Max Payne 3.

Oh yes.

Well???

This is one of those games that make me wish I hadn't sold my xbox and TV. Max Payne 3 was a classic from my youth that I played through several times (on the PC and Xbox). 2 diluted the formula that made Max Payne 2 and filtered it into a more generic, less exciting sequel, but for 3 it's a whole different time in gaming and the reinvention of Max Payne was necessary, and it looks like they're doing the right things with the character.

So how did it turn out? Can it compare to the original? Was it satisfying enough? And more importantly, was it Max Payne???

It has changed. Max is worse than ever due to his new alcohol and painkiller addiction and when a chance to leave New York presents itself, although not entirely convinced of the good it will do, does decide to take it.

Gameplay wise it is similar with the often seen over the shoulder aiming. While this may annoy some fans you can choose to play without holding the left trigger to aim, and unlike most games your accuracy does not decrease as a result.

Bullet time is a mix between the first and second game. It is not infinite like the shootdodge in MP2 and does not recharge by itself. Whereas MP1 used bullet time for aiming rather than speed and MP2 went overboard making it less about Max's reflexes and more about some kind of super power, MP3 is a nice compromise. Also, the meter builds up slowly when under fire to give you a fair chance if you run out.

There is also no health regen. You still use your painkillers and while they are less frequent they are more effective. In the last two games you took three or four to replenish your health but now you only take one, but like I said you don't find as many. The most I have ever found at once is two.

The setting is good aswell. Noir is not just a location but an atmosphere so I would describe it as Neo-Noir. It has the classic noir archetypes. Brooding characters, conspiracies, an anti-hero, and some metaphor lined narration. While there are parts set in sunny Sao Paulo, Max also has flashbacks to New Jersey. The environments are also as sleezy as ever.

I wouldn't say it's a reinvention. It still feels like a Max Payne game although it has moved with the times. It also has a completely different writing team that tries to carry on the style of Sam Lake's script and succeeds. There are a few problems with a couple of physics bugs here and there but nothing that breaks the game.

I'd say it does compare to the original. It does feel different and to some people that's a good thing and to others a bad thing, but it is the natural progression of Max's story. I'm happy with it but if you are considering it and are on the fence give it a rental. Even if the gameplay is brilliant if you don't like the feel of the game it's no good.

And Pimp. As I write this it's late and my post might be full of crap and incoherant wording. If you have any more questions I would be glad to answer them.

Just bought PS3 Devil May Cry HD collection. HUGE longtime fan of this series, but... *sucks breath* I knew they were gonna mess this one up. My hopes weren't high.

All 3 games in HD on PS3 seem to have slightly better-looking/cleaned up edges in the gameplay, that's about the only major positive difference.

The one that looks best for the change and benefits the most is probably DMC1. I think they've fixed Dante's "slow run", but other things have been blatantly neglected - such as the vortex animation in the corrupted world is actually missing, as are some minor glowing effects like the trails on Griffon's eyes. Some cutscenes are just upscaled - badly.

DMC2 is sharper but I haven't actually fired that one up yet to properly compare. Probably won't for a while.

I notice the contrast appears to have been turned up and the saturation turned down in DMC3 particularly. A lot of neon glow and lighting effects look washed-out or have been switched around and over-emphasized in the HD. A few cutscenes such as the opening video are even worse-looking in HD than the normal version - I presume someone actually lost the original in-game cutscenes and ended up using the ones from the trailers in it because some of them look terrible. I do notice some subtle differences with the sound quality in this one, and with some of the timing of enemy attacks. Nevan's attacks I think they've actually sped up a tiny bit; also noticed they've changed around the kinds of difficulty-dependent enemy encounters you get in DMC1, making harder enemies like shadows and frosts appear on normal mode, as though they want to show off all the enemy types the first time playing, but the general difficulty of the mode has been toned down. Bah.

Cheats are still in it but the game can't be saved with them activated, lulz.

They could have made this into a really neat set, instead of having visual incongruities everywhere.

</tirade>

P.S.: I still have all the originals, I just wanted copies I could play on the PS3 if my PS2 craps out. I guess I'm having fun with this, though. Any excuse to play some more classic DMC.

That's the problem with the HD remasters. I bought the Splinter Cell Trilogy last year and the good thing was that it was the PC version they used rather than the PS2. So you get a version on par with the PC which is always the best looking one.

Alas, it was not without problems. It had the worst framerate going. I'm talking dropping to 10fps in some parts. To me there is no excuse. Ubisoft took a ten year old game and put it on a console capable of so much more and still the framerate was balls.

I like some HD collections. The problem with console exclusive ones is that it will look the same but in 720p or if you're lucky 1080p. If you have a game that was released on PS2, XBox, Gamecube and the PC then you will have the best version chosen for the remaster as the developer can choose the best assets to use. Great if you played the graphically inferior version, not so much if you played it on the PC.

it was like when me and the missus bought the Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus HD remaster. Because it was only ever on the PS2 there was no option for using better textures and such unless Team Ico decided to make new ones, which would then make it a true remaster and not just a port. Hell, Ico and Shadow Of The colossus were locked at 30fps on a machine capable of displaying these kind of graphics at 60fps.

Long story short, if they are done well then I'm happy. Nine times out of ten they are a lazy way to make a quick buck off of fans.

Amen to that!!

I'm currently playing "Moon" on the DS. A pretty neat game and damn impressive for a portable FPS.

I have just beaten Sonic Generations, one of the most annoying games I've played in recent memory.

I went in expecting the highlights of Sonic's twenty year span and I was dissapointed. Green Hill, check, Chemical Plant Zone, check, Crisis City, WHY?

The Sonic Adventure levels were okay but the Sonic Heroes, Sonic 2006 and Sonic Colours levels were horrid. As you progress further through the game the level quality gets worse and worse because the designs are less original and lackk imagination.

The controls were dire aswell. Unresponsive and clunky and that's me being nice. The game is also too fast when it came to the classic Sonic gameplay and it was worse for it. The Megadrive (Genesis to my Yank brothers) games were never as fast as this. They could have got away with slowing classic Sonic down by going "hey, he has shorter legs". A modern Sonic game should not have these kind of controls. It's 2012, not 1999.

I did like some of the references though. I will always call Robotnik by his original name (I know that he was always called Eggman in the Japanese release) and they made light of that as well of some of the corny dialogue (when Amy is gushing Sonic gives a funny look to they viewer). The voice acting was as convincing as a Nun in a brothel and I'm glad classic Sonic did not utter a word.

I also downloaded Sonic CD off of the Playstation Store and can tell you it plays a lot better and is more fun and less frustrating. A couple of the bosses even require you to excersise the ol' grey matter insead of hitting X when the lock-on icon appears.

Hey, they just wanted to take you on a tour of Sonic history, so of course it gets worse the more you play!

"Sonic Colors" was actually pretty decent on the DS.

As for me... I finally gave in to the temptation and bought a Wii, second-hand (though it wasn't registered and now I've got 1500 star points at Club Nintendo Smile ) and it's been glorious. I've been wanting a Wii ever since they showed it at E3 before it was released...
So far I've only got 3 games for it - Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Conduit 2 and pack-in Wii Sports. I'm not very keen on the Mii's, but Wii Sports is actually fun.
Now I gotta go save up for "Metroid Prime: Trilogy". They've got multiple copies at pretty much every store that sells Wii games in my town, but 70 BGN (about 50-60 bucks)... that's steep Neutral

Can't wait for forza horizon. A free roaming forza game is going to be sooooo good. Also will be getting the Tony Hawk 1 and 2 games they are remastering for 360. They were the best tony hawk games and are going to be awesome in HD. Then Halo 4 later on. This year is awesome for games... On 360 anyway. Oh yeah also the Skyrim expansion is coming.... Too much for me to handle.

RoboDemise :

I think the only company to bomb at this years E3 was Nintendo. Considering they have a new console coming out they should be blowing us away with what this new console can do.

I have a mate who has held off of getting Batman: Arkham City as he wanted to get it "for the most powerful console it would be released on". When he saw that the WiiU version was pretty much the same save for a new character model (armoured Batman), tacked on motion controls and the ability to select gadgets with the new tablet controller he went out abd got a copy for the 360.

One of the WiiU's best launch games should not be a port of a year old game that 99% of the people who wanted it actually went out and bought it.

Pretty much all of the companies failed on this year's E3. Nintendo however was the biggest disappointment to me, especially after the great presentation last year.

Anyway, I recently beat "Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions" on Wii. Is it just me or do other people too hate levels that take approx. 40 minutes to beat? After around half the levels, the game gets extremely repetative and instead of making me want more after a level it just makes me want to take a rest and finish it faster tomorrow, so I can move on to a better game...

Today I went to my best buddy's place and took my SNES with me. We played some "Killer Instinct" and beat "Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage". Good times Smile

Binary Domain.

My God this has got to be one of the most surprising games I have ever played. I went in expecting an average game but I got a game that was so much more.

The graphics are great, the gameplay is solid, the feel of the gunplay is fantastic (the enemy robots break apart when you shoot them), the story has some twists and turns, the voice acting is good (and made me laugh in a cheesy sort of way), the characters are likeable and the bosses have an old school charm to them. I cannot stress how underrated this game is.

The only letdown for me was a few control niggles (going into cover when I didn't want to) and your team mates AI. There would be tmes where they wouldn't revive me or just wouldn't shoot the enemies as much as I would have liked.

SEGA did not market this game and as a result it sold poorly, yet they continue to pull out all the stops when marketing their latest Sonic game which normally turns out to be a colossal anal sphincter. This game can be found dirt cheap so I heartily recommend you pick it up or at lkeast rent it.

I went to my grandparents' place for a couple of days and played some stuff on the Genesis. I beat "The Lost Vikings" which is still the best game Blizzard ever made, if you ask me. Also played through "Batman", "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie", "Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse".
I was thinking of trying to beat "Judge Dredd", but that game simply makes me scream with hatred. Got to the last boss a couple of times, but the last password it's given me is for 6 levels back... I'm sure the ending won't be worth it...

I also started playing "Professor Layton and the Curious Village" on the DS. More games like this need to be made.
