But my opinion of Robo 1 did change. As I grew up I realised that the film had so many underlaying themes that are so representative of society as a whole, while also being an exaggerated version of it. |
ahhh my friend i appreciate aperson who can see the big picture. | Riight...that's kinda...creepy. _________________

In my opinion , Veerhoven has always been good at pointing out societal flaws /hypocracies, and some "future predictions" i mean , if you look at total recal , they have a news monitor in the kitchen on earth , and it looks like a window after they turn off the tv. this was before plasma screens were even realized. likewise , i think alot of cycborg research was conceieved by the fact we BELIEVED it was possible because of movies such as robocop. Now our amputee veterans are coming back with very complex prosthetics with servos, positioning sensors and myoelectric interfaces. some of which allow for sensory feedback!!! Always remember that science fiction is still based on science and eventually becomes science fact. Remember, space travel and lunar exploration were once only dreams reserved for the "idle brained and fool hearty" (tom hanks, form the earth to the moon) as was cloning and cyborgs likewise, cyborgs and enforcement droids will become more prominent technologies as time progresses.

my first impression from robocop .. damn I had really fear of him and entire film I watched first film as 7 or 8 years old ..really I had also some nightmares with the Emils toxic scenes |
I too was horrified by the toxic scene, and some other scenes, and that's why i watched R2 more. It wasn't as bad. The only scene that got me was when they showed Cain's brain, but I don't know why. |
good I am not the only one .. really I had two days really strange feeling of it better said, when I went sleep I still saw the Emils ugly face and did not can asleep so I had to sleep with light
also the scene with Cains brain was ugly but then I watched R2 I had 12 years already .. so I did not can get any fear ! _________________

the scene where the brain was in the nutrient tank or the scene where it gets smashed?
i still find murphy's death scene tyo be one of the most horrific scenes ever portayed. i guess it just makes you think . could anyone be shot that many times and live. it really makes you feel sorry for the character even without the head wound , it rewally makes for a bad day. but then verhoven portrays it in such a way that you relate to murphy's will to live as you continue to see his flashbacks throughout his ER scene, and you realize he is disabled and not dead. perfect for robocop. sorry if my spelling is off "it's been wierd night , and i've had a little bit to drink" (transformers quote.)

um,yeah.....when it came out (i was there opening weekend 1987...which should tell you i'm getting old!) i liked it for the violence, blood, music, and cool look of Robo....over the years i've picked up the subtelties of the story, and realized there was more to it than action and bloodshed...
the corporate greed overrunning America,to the point where a fellow exec just killed in front of you yields the response "That's life in the big city!"
corporations literally stealing someone's soul, and making them into a puppet for them...then the struggle and triumph of regaining the soul.
the family storyline i didn't really care about the first time, but i realized it was the heart and soul of the movie, and the ignition that brings Murphy back.

I've always liked RoboCop. When I was a kid I used to like things like RoboCop, T1/T2, Die Hard. etc. Basically movies with a lot of guns and good action.
My general opinions on movies have definately matured these days. I like to look for the extra stuff in the movies that I watch, especially on movies that I've watched to death.
RoboCop was definately no exception. As I got older, I actually started to see and realize the extra things that were kind of hidden in the movie; the social satire and the resurrection story, and other such sub-elements. Kinda like how Verhoeven caught onto them once he actually started reading the script.
I won't say my opinion of RoboCop has really changed, it's just kind of grown some. _________________

| RoboPimp : | When I was younger I liked Robocop 2 the best, because it was more comic book like. I also enjoyed the cartoons a fair bit more then I do now. Over time I learned more about Robo and was able to respect the depth and art that Robocop 1 has.
I was wondering if anyone else had feelings like this, maybe they liked something and grew to not like it, or vica versa. Or have you pretty much had the same feelings about the stuff over time? |
Well the frist time I saw Robocop, was the old cartoons, I was just a little boy (4 years old, I guess), and I realy wanted to see the movie, but my mother didnīt want to me to see it, "itīs to violent" she said, but thanks to my grandmother I was able to see it (GOD bless my grandmother) I loved the movie, It was when I learned that robocop was a man, not just a machine, and strange thing is that I was not shocked with the scene where Murphy is killed, I kinda loved that scene
Then I watched the sequels, but I donīt think It was that bad, but... seing ED209 being programed by a little girl, I just hated that, I love ED209!
But loved to see him shooting against the security concepts officers
I felt very sorry for Lewis when I watched her die
But My opinion changed (A LOT) when I saw PD, I was just... "No man, thats wrong... that is not the sound of his footsteps, and thats not the way he moves".
To me, the major problem in PD was fletcher as robocop....
(I didnīt even care about the rest of the story)
And in the 1994 series, I still love them, despite it was a family show
But today, I still watch the movie, to see if I can find "extras" inside the movie, looking at the background and those kinds of things
But ROBOCOP 1 will always be the best movie ever made _________________

For the longest time i found R2 better than R1. It was mainly a visual thing really as R2 just looks better and R1 often comes of as a bit gray and grainy. ( I have watched the RoboCain battle at the end more times than the drugbust in R1 for example. ) I later realized that story wise R1 is of course better and is a much more enjoyable movie to actually watch as a whole.
Although i was reminded of how awesome in color R2 is when i watched the two movies on a huge 45 flatscreen the other day. R1 on DVD was basically unwatchable for it's grainy and noise picture while R2 still looked great.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who liked R2 better at one point. I thought I had some kind of problem. I guess it was just n00bage. _________________

I can understand what Johan's saying, basically because he's right. Visually, yeah R2 is better.
But, as you very well should know...

i think, while Robo 2 DEFINITELY looked better than the first one, therein lies part of the problem with it....
Robo 1 felt like (and was ) alower-budget film....some of the effects still stick out today (namely "freddy-arm" Jones at the end) ,but they made up for this with a great story and great performances for those involved...since most of the effects budget went to the Robo suit, they HAD to step up every other aspect of the movie because they wouldn't be able to fall back on ground-breaking SFX or stunts to save their ass...the actual MOVIE itself had to rock,or all was lost...
Robo 2 felt like the slick, hollywood blockbuster type of movie...let's throw $50 million at it and it'll be great (at the time a lot of money for a movie)...storyline and acting,no longer having to be the backbone to move the story and film foward in a satisfatory way, took a backseat to more mayhem, more effects, more stunts, and more explosions...
Robo 1 felt more PERSONAL...if that makes sense....we were down in the trenches and gutteers with these people, and saw and felt their pain and triumpths........Robo 2 felt like an experience, something that takes you for a ride, but you have no connection to the characters...you don't feel embedded with them, you just feel like you're watching a movie, not experiencing their plight firsthand...
to sum it up:
RoboCop: gritty,low-budget,dark,character-driven action film....
RoboCop 2: slick,glossy,polished high-budget Hollywood Super-hero action film...
i like them both, but Robo 2 lacked the heart and soul that made the first a truly special experience....

I think the only thing that has changed for me from watching it as i have grown up is now i am older, i probally have more of a deeper appreciation of the movie as a whole as i understand a lot more things then i would have when i first started watching it as a young girl.
I quite loved the action scenes when i was younger, but i now also really appreciate the deeper more moving scenes like the scene where he re-lives certain memories of his past when he goes into his former home. i also quite like whole take on it being much like Jesus where u have the Crucifiction and resurrection.
