The planned remake/reboot of the "Robocop" franchise looks to have been terminated according to both The Financial Times and Moviehole. Director Darren Aronofsky ("The Wrestler") has apparently abandoned the project which, combined with MGM's financial situation, "is now considered officially dead". Last year Aronofsky and David Self were said to be working on the script.

From Moviehole website http://www.moviehole.net/201025648-sdcc-robocop-is-gone-kaput-canceled:
| Quote: | About half-an-hour after a reader sent over a link to a Financial Times article in the suggesting Darren Aronofsky had scrapped all plans for his "Robocop" remake (to no one's surprise really, right? I mean, MGM can't even afford to feed the lion right now, let alone those on the payroll!) I fortuitously ran into an old friend from the studio, here at Comic Con... as he dashed his way up the escalators.
It was brief, but we managed to speak a little about the MGM situation ("... but don't print that" ) was muttered a few times) and Aronofsky's "RoboCop" remake.
"Gone. Kaput. Canceled. It was one of the first casualties", my Metro-Goldwyn Buddy said. "[Darren] has lost interest anyway, I believe. Think we're all just going to have to be happy with the three RoboCop movies that are out there".
Apparently MGM were also looking at doing another "Rocky" movie - though not necessarily with Sylvester Stallone - and a new "Amityviille Horror" , shortly before the roof caved in.
Had no time to ask about the Bond and "Hobbit" situation but might bump into my friend over the weekend again sometime. |

I'm just assuming Robo is in the same boat as all other MGM projects at the moment. They are delayed indefinitely. MGM just doesn't have the cash to do anything so nothing is gonna happen before they either sell their full robo rights or get some money.
It's sad because this affects a lot of other big name titles aswell, like Bond and The Hobbit

I don't really care that it got scrapped. I lost interest since they announced it was a remake. But the Rocky without Stallone sounds disturbing... _________________

For me thats actually terrific news. I hate the idea of redoing movies that are completely fine. People should remake movies that suck, not movies that rock

I'd say whatever if the quote 'We have to be happy with the three movies we have' wasn't in there, that statement never did shit for me, bah.
BUT, well, whatever anyway. This is probably the most solid piece of news we've had on this whole project. The fact that it's telling us the 'reinvention' that we didn't ask for, didn't really care for and didn't really want has now fallen into MGM's big hairy black hole is just not all that distressing, to me at least.
KGW said it - spend the money you don't have 'reinventing' the bullshit, and leave great movies alone. _________________

I agree, I never understood why they felt the need to remake such an awsome movie anyway, it was never gonna be anywhere near as good as the original. Most remakes never are as good as the original, so i'm not upset about it.

Report: ‘Robocop’ remake cancelled
Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 at 2:38 am | BNO News | Leave a Comment
By BNO News
LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) -- The long anticipated "RoboCop" remake will not be patrolling a movie theater near you. A source close to director Darren Aronofsky says the remake has been cancelled.
"Gone. Kapute. Canceled. It was one of the first causalities" of the ongoing financial state of MGM film studios, the source told website Moviehole over the weekend. "[Darren] has lost interest anyway, I believe. Think we’re all just going to have to be happy with the three RoboCop movies that are out there."
RoboCop was a late 1980s, early 1990s movie franchise starring Peter Weller. The films were set in a near-future American city and centered on a police officer who was brutally murdered and brought back to life as a super-human cyborg known as RoboCop.
Several remakes of RoboCop had been in the works since 2005. Sony Pictures announced they were working on a new RoboCop film in late 2005, but that production was ultimately halted in 2006.
In 2008, an MGM press release regarded RoboCop as a franchise its film division would focus on in the future. At the 2008 Licensing International Expo, MGM displayed a poster that read "RoboCop coming 2010."
The studio then met with "The Wrestler" director Darren Aronofsky to direct the film, but production never got off the ground.
The remake would have been the fourth film in the series. |
Confirmed and Thank God.

Funny you mention the comics. I went down to the local comic store and asked if they had any of the dynamite RoboCop comics, and he proceeded to tell me they didn't exist. I insisted that they were current, and so he checked his order catalog. I'm not sure what catalog it was, but the June 2010 issue made no mention of any past or upcoming RoboCop comics from Dynamite.

It is important to point out that, although likely, there have been nothing OFFICIAL about this.
All the links are quoting the SAME source, the "moviehole" website that had a talk with a guy at comicon they say work close to MGM. Nothing solid or official at all.
Again, the robo remake is probably dead, which we all have assumed for some time, but there have been no OFFICIAL statement about this.
