When I was younger, I used to have Robocop and Robocop 2 on one VHS cassette. It was one of those "double feature" things, I'm sure you've seen them. Anyhow, I hated Robocop 2 SO MUCH, that I GAVE it to someone! Just GAVE it to them, then went out and bought a VHS of Robocop on it's own.

Then, when it was released on DVD it was around the time of a birthday. So I asked my girlfriend to get me the DVD as my present that year.

So, thinking she was a great girlfriend - she went out and got me the DVD boxed set with Robocop, Robocop 2, and Robocop 3!!!

GAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

And of course, I couldn't tell her I hated the other two - cause I wanted to spare her feelings. I thought "It's ok, it's cool, just cause they are in this box doesn't mean I have to watch them..."

But of course, she'd never seen Robocop and wanted to watch it with me. And of course, she loved it and enjoyed it.

And of course, she wanted to watch 2 and 3 after....

NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Now the funny thing would be if she really, REALLY liked the second and most especially the third one... and forced you to see them with her repeatedly.

Thanks for offering us this moment of schadenfreude Wink

I'm not with that girl now. I'm now married to someone else.

I watched Robocop with my wife, and she suggested taking a look at the sequels. I advised her against it and showed her the trailer for Robocop 2 hoping she'd think "wow, that looks like garbage!"

But no. She said it looked like fun. So I said "If you watch this, I'm going out".

Never has done.

Yeah, but in all fairness, Robocop 2 has a pretty damn good trailer. It's incredibly misleading. tongue

Hmmmm, is there any special reason you HATE RoboCop2?

I mean the third movie is widely known as crappy because they turned it into a kids movie but what is so extremely bad about Robo2 that makes you HATE it?

Most Robofans like Robo2 or at least parts of it. RoboCain for example. Just downright hate towards the whole thing is pretty rare.

I second that!

I'm also curious as to why you dislike R2 so much. The second movie is BRILLIANT in my opinion, so I really can't, or rather wouldn't, say anything against it. So let's hear it, eh? tongue

I'm one of the very few (or the only one?) who actually holds the second movie as his favorite in the franchise. But it's my fourth directive never to claim that as an objective (rather than subjective) fact.

I hate the bit at the start where a thug holds a gun to a baby's head. Personally, I find stuff like that VERY upsetting. Verhoeven would never do a scene like that (he's against showing scenes of children in immediate danger).
The story I find illogical, that they'd use a drug addicted criminal to make the new Robocop out of. There is just NO WAY the can sell that to me as an audience member as a good idea. I'm sure Murphy wasn't the only good cop in the whole of detroit.
Plus, the 12 year old villian Hob. Found that distasteful. Along with the violence (dude getting gutted like a fish with a scalpel) was a bit much. Yeah I know the first one's violent, but at least the violence has a point. You know?
Amid all this sickening violence are moments of ill advised comedy (like the mugging at the beginning of the movie) that seem to be out of an early Richard Lester film. Makes the tone of the movie VERY uneven, so as an audience member I never know where I stand with it. To futher confuse that particular matter, is the VERY ill advised score by Leonard Rosenman. Having a choir chant "ROBO - COP" over the theme... man... it sounds like it's out of a long forgotten cheesy 80's cartoon, especially as we were so spoiled with Basil Poledouris' beautiful, lyrical, haunting - and yet rousing score for the original.
Peter Weller's performance came across as cheesy, making dumb wisecracks with little or no charisma. He sounds like Dudley Do-Right EVEN before he gets the extra 200 or so directives.

I think the biggest victim here is Irvin Kershner, and I sense a lot of studio interference. Kershner was more interested in the human aspect of ANY story he did, and if he was left alone he probably would've delivered something special. Sadly the film's most interesting plot-line, the one about Murphy's wife, is only merely paid lip service to, rather than being explored fully. That to me, reeks of compromise between Kershner and whoever was breathing down his neck - like they said to him "OK, you've done your ten minutes of character exploration, now give us giant robots beating the shit out of one another for 90 minutes", or whatever.

So in closing, whilst there are some interesting moments - they are few and far between, the film is just a complete mess. A total fuck up where all the elements aren't in sync with each other.

Robocop 2 is the film that Robocop would've been, had they not got someone like Paul Verhoeven who had a vision. Kershner had no vision here, it was just something he took on at the last minute. And it really shows.

Hope this explanation is satisfying.

Very true.

No point? If you were one of Cain's thugs in that room, would you ever think of crossing him after witnessing that?

Also true. But chanting aside it was a great soundtrack.

...and that's as much as I can type before my fourth directive makes me go into shut down (because yeah, I cannot agree with any of the other points raised) Wink

I fucking hate RoboCop 2, and I'm right there with you on most everything you said. Thank you! It's just an incredible mess of a movie, a film almost remarkable in just how poorly pieced together it is. The few elements that work are visual (such as the revamped RoboSuit) while almost everything else under the sun is unbearable. Nonsensical plot, insulting attempts to invite the audience's compassion, huge lapses in logic, little to no follow-up on almost every story thread and character introduced... the film is a frustrating experience.

Anyway, I don't agree with some of the issues on taste. I think it's the difference between concept and execution that's the problem with the violence. Hob is a big problem for me, though. He's meant from the get-go to be a "oh-no-what's-wrong-with-today's-world" stab at gut, but instead comes off as a gimmick. Then the film flips around and expects you to instantly feel sorry for the little murderer because he's "just-a-kid-snatched-up-by-a-bad-crowd", and I can't help but feel angry that Miller and Kershner think that an audience is that easily manipulable. I find Hob's death to be genuinely insulting.

Yeah, RoboCop 3 sucks. We all know that. But RoboCop 3 was an intentionally watered-down, goofy and kid-appealing entry. It knew what it was, regardless of how crappy that may be, and I can stand the film for those reasons. RoboCop 2 seems to really believe itself to be a great movie, and the complete ineptitude on display, coupled with what appears to be total blindness to that, is more-or-less why I hate RoboCop 2.

Gah. Rant over.

Personally speaking, I didn't need to see some dude get filleted for that point to be made.

Listen guys, all this is? Just my opinion. I'm not trying to ruin the film for anyone here. If this movie works for you, I'll die for your right to love it.

For me, it's like the difference between "Goodfellas" and "Casino". Whilst the latter is not a sequel to the former, it IS a follow up of sorts. "Goodfellas" is violent for sure, but the violence is never glorified and makes perfect sense within the context of the story. Whearas in "Casino", it's ramped up to almost unbearable levels and it stops being entertaining - and enters the realms of tastelessness. That is the EXACT same problem with Robocop 2, in regards to the first movie.

I think a BETTER story would be ANOTHER cop getting turned into Robocop 2, but going strange and bad LATER. Murphy has to kill him, but feels conflicted about it, cause he feels a unique kinship with him. Could've been interesting.
