Blue Thunder (1983)

Classic '80s airborne action thriller which was a definite forerunner to Airwolf and even spawned a short-lived series that was like a cross between The A-Team and Hill Street Blues. Also, Blue Thunder features a cop called Murphy (Scheider), a member of the Los Angeles Astro (Helicopter) Division who is assigned by government officials to test out a brand new combat helicopter equipped with surveillance cameras, boom mikes, turbine boost and an electric rotating cannon at its nose. But as Murphy and his partner fly the craft as part of their initiation, they find out its real purpose is far more sinister than fighting crime so Murphy steals it and a battle in the skies ensues as the police, the US Air Force and an old enemy go after Blue Thunder.

This has a few similarities also with RoboCop because it is about a machine that is supposed to be used for "urban pacification" but there are ulterior motives. Also in RoboCop, Murphy wanted to get out of the machine whereas the Murphy in Blue Thunder wanted to destroy it.
