Thought you might want to know a couple of details about the RoboCop 20th Anniversary DVD that's coming out in the U.S. soon. The DVD was released in Australia last week, though under the title "RoboCop -- Definitive Edition" and released through Fox Home Entertainment.
On August 21st, MGM will release the DVD in the US. It will be a 2 Disc set, featuring both versions of the movie (Disc One - Theatrical Cut, and Disc Two - Extended Cut).
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Info below provided by Australian Robofan "SGB" )
The video has better color quality and more detail. It's a bit similar to the
Criterion transfer but not the same.
The audio and video transfer is new and a huge improvement over the previous MGM DVD. The audio is clearer and does not have the tinny sound that plagued the barebones and SE DVDs. Speaking of the audio, the uncut version of Murphy\'s death has a new sound mix.
The Paul Verhoeven easter egg is of him talking about his "cameo" in the film.
Most of the details, trivia and tidbits mentioned in the featurettes will already be known to die-hard fans but there was some new stuff that I previously did not know about, such as ...
-- Kurtwood Smith coming up with the idea of Clarence spitting blood on the table when asking for his phone call
-- Ray Wise kept the torn and tattered remains of Leon's clothing after it was destroyed in the crane control tower explosion, which he keeps wrapped in plastic "just like Laura Palmer"
-- how Phil Tippett achieved the effect of ED-209's muzzle flash when he fires his guns
Btw, here's a run down of who appeared in the featurettes:
Peter Weller
Ronny Cox
Kurtwood Smith
Ray Wise
Miguel Ferrer
Paul Verhoeven (who's really aged a lot since the SE DVD)
Ed Neumeier (who's put on weight)
Michael Miner (who's lost weight)
Jon Davison
Phil Tippett
Craig Hayes (ED-209 co-designer and co-animator)
Rocco Gioffre (matte painting artist)
William Sandell (production designer)
Paul Sammon (former Orion exec)
I enjoyed the featurettes but wish they had been longer. There's so much other stuff they didn't cover. I really wish they had covered the filming of Kinney and Murphy's deaths but nothing was ever mentioned about either scene.

<--- DVD meny (kinda weak..)
<--- Old MGM version
<--- NEW MGM version
<--- Old MGM version
<--- NEW MGM version
Oh, and just to clarify.
Some of the older pics may SEEM better because MGM did too much tinkering with the picture on the old DVD, resulting in incorrect contrast, brightness and colour levels. (Noticeably in the Murphy old DVD pic where half the window in the upper right is washed out. )
Also, the frame has opened up a slight bit on the new DVD. It's especially noticeable in the shot of Clarence taunting Murphy.
<--- OLD
<--- NEW

Great comparison...
Indeed the new one looks much more filmlike. You really don't need EE and all that shit for crappy TV sets.
THX!

Hell yeah! This is what I'm talking about. Some of the stuff looks like it will truly kick ass. I just hope the UK gets a Blu-Ray version...

Good work SGB, where ever you are...
I like the fact they have got most of the cast to return to do the interviews. I want this...

The newer version looks brighter but the older version looks higher level in contrast. I will still buy it as I own almost every version of video tapes/DVD relating to RoboCop. How much is it going to be? Is it going to cost more than USD$22?

Whether it's just me being ignorant and not paying attention or seeing things, the aspect looks wider on the new DVD.
